Bellied up to the counter at Rhek Thum's 7-Eleven this morning, paying a bill. No one else in line. No other customers in the whole store. Quiet. Cashier, tongue poking from the corner of her mouth, is tap-tap-tapping in long numbers.

Ding-Dong. Guy enters. Not a local. Strides up next to me. Waving baht like I’m not there, just starts telling the cashier what he wants. Cigarettes and booze, blah, blah, blah. Then he blades himself in front of me. I step away. What do I care? The girl’s almost done with my transaction. She’s already got my 1000 in her hand.

But she’s really frowning because he’s disrupting her concentration. She stops, gives him a small smile and says, “I help you when I finish farang.”

Not, One moment, sir, while I finish with this customer/patron/buyer/shopper.

Not, Please wait until I take care of this gentleman/guy/dude/fellow/handsome son-of-a-buck.

Nope. The local guava. Our own village idiot.

But at least the guy stepped off with a smile and a nod in my direction.

I've had cashiers respond by dropping what they were doing for me and talking to the interrupter. When this happens I stand in front of the interrupter, moving if he moves, blocking their view of each other.

Yes, in this case the cashier did well.
