Residents want establishment of Bua Yai as the country’s 78th province

BANGKOK: -- About 1,000 of residents from eight districts of Nakhon Ratchasima province gathered at the Suranaree monument vowing support for the separation of Bua Yai district from Nakhon Ratchasima and establish it as the country's 78th province.

The gathering was led by Mr Kampan Bunyuen, a retired education official of Bua Yai district.

The eight districts which residents said they wanted to come under Bua Yai province if it is separated from Nakhon Ratchasima and upgraded to the same status as Nakhon Ratchasima are Bua Yai, Ban Liem, Prathai, Kung, Nondaeng, Keng Sanamnang, Bualai and Sida.

They carried posters calling on Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha to support their call to be the 78th province.

They reasoned that coming under the administration of Nakhon Ratchasima has made them second status citizen because they are not treated equally both in medical services and local development.

Their districts have no major hospital, no university, thus forcing their children to travel over hundred kilometres to go to quality schools and to get medical services.

They said if Bua Yai is upgraded to a province, it will expect more improvement and funds to develop their local administrations and people will no longer need to travel a long way to the Nakhon Ratchasima town to study, or get medical services.

Mr Kampan also said there had been referendum of people of the eight districts and the result showed that 80% of 340,000 population of the eight districts wanted to become Bua Yai province.

Thats interesting.

The Town I live in is wanting to be a province as well. It is in the Khon Kaen area.

They are serious here and have started building the infrastructure required of a province. Provincial courts, a jail, a decent hospital and a few other things.

Apparently if one can be declared a province it is beneficial because one gets a greater share of the Tax which lead to more amenities.

I hope they succeed.

Regards

Nang Rong in South West Buriram has been agitating to become a separate province for some time.

Thats correct. New gov buildings went up some time ago, cannot remember but it must have been 10 years ago. Plenty of rumours and naturally nothing happened. I don't know what the advantages of trying to become a province are. Possibly in hgetting more localised government money as opposed to the provincal capital spending it all on themselves..
