American Man Caught While Swimming to North Korea

MOSCOW, September 17, 2014 (RIA Novosti) – A US citizen was caught by South Korean soldiers while trying to swim across the river that separates the country from North Korea, the South Korean Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday.

“A male American citizen was arrested last night while attempting to swim across the river to North Korea”, a Defense Ministry spokesperson told AFP.

The man was found lying exhausted on the southern bank of the Han River, meters away from the North-South border. Investigators said the man had planned to meet with North Korean leader Kin Jong-un, reports the Guardian.

The heavily militarized border between the two Koreas is a dangerous place to attempt border crossings. A handful of North Koreans regularly attempt to escape the country, however many had been fatally shot by the border guards, according to a recent UN report on North Korean human rights violations.

American tourist loves North Korea and Kim Jong-un

American tourists must love North Korea. Despite warnings by the US State Department not to travel to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, a record number of US tourists do. One American visitor to Korea loved traveling to the Northern Korea so bad, he tried to swim across the Han River in the Gyeonggi Province. The river borders South and North Korea.

He was arrested by South Korean border guards. The arrest took place around midnight on Tuesday.

The reason for the American to cross into North Korea was to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Surprisingly, this is not the first time someone has been spotted trying to swim into North Korea. In September of last year, a South Korean man was seen attempting to cross the border, only to be shot and killed by troops guarding the border.

The American’s arrest also comes just a few days after US citizen Matthew Todd Miller received six years in a labor camp by a North Korean court. The 24-year-old was sentenced for violating his tourist status.
