All the ridicule aside, I question the source of the news and will wait for the something a bit more official (then Coconut's) before weighing judgement.

If its true a vaccine has been successfully developed it will be bad news for the pharmaceutical companies producing ZMapp because they probably were planning to make a killing off of it.

Not every ebola case is deadly.

Have to admit to being a bit skeptical of this claim. Did it get to human trials? If not, then jumping the gun on this announcement. Then the steps of getting FDA approval internationally can take months to years. The below announced Sept. 17, 2014. Though they say vaccine rather than cure.

I am extremely skeptical about this claim. The attempts to develop an Ebola vaccine to prevent developing the disease. No one is expecting to develop a cure for those already infected with the virus. No one has ever developed a cure for any disease caused by a virus to my knowledge. All we can do is protect by developing preventitive vaccines.

So if this article about an Ebola cure is true it would be absolutely astounding ground breaking stuff. Nobel prizes will surely follow..............

You must factor in that the announcement has been translated into English by reporters whose knowledge of science or medicine is close to, or actually, zero. These two features absolutely guarantee there are massive errors and inaccuracies in any newspaper account.

Firstly, the "cure" announcement has no chance at all of being correct, as to know you have a "cure" you must test your agent on patients with the disease, and these are not available to Thai researchers. So this is not going to be the case.

Secondly, this has been announced as two separate and mutually exclusive things, a "vaccine" and an "antibody". If it is a vaccine then it is not an antibody, and if it is an antibody it cannot be a vaccine. So one of these things will not be the case.

An "antibody" is a protein that the body makes to recognise, then cling onto, invading organisms like bacteria or viruses,which targets them for destruction by white cells as part of the process of fighting disease . They could also be made in cell culture using cells isolated from mice which have been injected with a bit of Ebola protein, these are called "monoclonal antibodies". This is a fairly routine procedure that could be done for example, as an undergraduate research project.

A single monoclonal antibody has almost no chance of being effective as a "cure" for Ebola even if it were made in huge quantities and injected into people. You need a mix of monoclonals to have a chance. This would also be prohibitively expensive. However these are useful tools for detecting whether the Ebola virus is present in a sample because the monoclonal antibody will stick onto it. There have been many groups that have raised monoclonal antibodies to Ebola over the last 15 years.

I would make an educated guess that this is what the Thais have done - a decent, possibly useful repeat of work done many times before, with no single shred of evidence that this has any effect on the disease whatsoever.

And to think that they want to promote Thailand as the Medical Hub! I used to think highly of Siriraj Hospital.....no longer. Do not worry...the headline is definitely misleading compared to what the smart arsed buffoons are expected to say on Thursday. They are most probably hiring a PR firm to draft their speeches now that they realised that they made a mistake ....though the news in Thai got positive response as it made thais even more nationalistic and xenophobic as every Somchai and Ying in the street is marvelling at how great Thailand is !

They also will find the cure for cancer, hiv and you name it soon.
