Purple morning glory along Karon beach removed

PHUKET: -- Karon locals are still angry after purple morning glory flowers were removed from the beach in preparation for next month's 4th Asian Beach Games despite officials promising to plant them back after the event.

The contracting company in charge of making preparations for the event, to be played in beaches all over Phuket from November 14 to 23, removed the purple flowers along an approximate 1.5 km stretch of Karon beach on Tuesday (October 7).

But in a meeting on Wednesday (October 8) Ittiporn Sangkaew, Deputy Mayor of Karon, agreed that officials will re-plant the morning glory flowers – which are in-bloom from October to December – shortly after the event ends on November 24.

Karon Municipality, along with help local residents, are usually in charge of improving and maintaining the morning glory flowers.

“I think Karon beach has more than enough space for competition – there was no need to destroy our beautiful landscape like this. Karon Municipality should have suggested another option to [the company] instead of ignoring the problem,” Karon Sub-district chief (Kamnan) Winai Chidchiew told The Phuket News.

Regional Environmental Office 15 (REO15) based in Phuket confirmed that removing morning glory has not affected the local environment.

“Morning glory is a plant that easy to plant and fast to grow, I think it can make a comeback after the games,” Dr Pornsri Suthanarak the Director of REO15 told The Phuket News.

I'm really surprised the locals aren't demanding compensation. I know that when the FIVB volleyball competition was held in Karon, everyone and their brother had their hand out towards the organizers demanding compensation. That's the main reason why this is now held in Pattaya this year, Karon locals were/are too greedy. I wonder if the (hopefully soon to be convicted) mayor has his hand out for this event.

Perhaps he'll do a "Keesin", and disappear.

If it's Khun Pian Keesin the ex-mayor you are referring to I suggest you act a little more respectfully. His funeral rights are being held at this moment, following his very recent 'accidental' death at home.

Much as Khun Pian would have liked to have controlled Karon as well as Patong he didn't quite manage it.

The Morning Glory they're talking about here is not the mis-translated morning glory ("booa bok") that appears on a lot of Thai menus that are in English. The true Morning Glory's seeds actually contain a chemical compound that is very similar to LSD and they give the same psychedelic effect to those who eat them.

I would imagine that a few posters will be searching for some seeds to prove your statement.w00t.gif

Show respect.Why?

When the Thais post pictures of of the young couple murdered on Koh Tao horrific injuries on the internet.

They do not deserve any respect

So you're saying "the Thais" (i.e., all Thai people) "do not deserve respect" because a very few Thais posted pictures of the murdered couple? Given this logic, and given that all races/peoples/countries have some bad people, do you you think all the peoples of the world don't deserve respect.

I don't know what you're on about, but obviously you don't know the local scene very well. The Karon mayor who is very much alive, has been arrested multiple times in the past couple of months due to his "mafia" behaviour. This includes raking in millions by handing out concessions to beach chair operators so they can stick it to local hotels for the rights to allow guests to sit on the hotels sunchairs.

Any way, this morning glory will be back with a vengeance. It is everywhere and they only removed what can be seen. What cannot be seen will grow, and quickly.

The players on that beach better not stand still too long in one spot

I'll show the late Pian Keesin the same amount of respect he had shown me over the years of visting, and then living, on Phuket - ABSOLUTELY ZERO.

This article highlights one of my favorite things about Thailand--the Love that many Thai people (men included) have for flowers and beautification efforts for their communities.

These volunteers have a right to be angered when they see the fruits of their labor torn up and they likely know more about local politics than most of us when they voice concern no replanting effort was likely going to be made after the games are over--that is, until they forced such a promise by organizing a protest.

Good for them and thanks to them for their efforts!

Purple Morning Glory is a environmental weed in many situations but on sand it does serve the purpose of holding the sand together to prevent erosion by water , wind and by traffic use (pedestrian and vehicular). After the games there may be little sand left . But i do wonder wether it is either the aesthetic or environmental reasons the locals are upset .
