Talk about an overreaction. And yes, you do get rape and murder at rave parties back home. When I was growing up there were three murders a day in Los Angeles. I'd say things in Thailand are far more safe than they are in major western cities, where there are murders every day and most of them don't even get any type of news coverage. I think the problem is here we have older retired people who are probably basing their opinions on the safeness of their middle class communities for like aged people. The Full Moon Parties, raves, etc attract younger and less coddled crowd which will attract seedier types of people and be a bit more dangerous.That having been said for the thousands of people who participate in those things, the number of incidents is not out of place with what you would have in other parts of the world.

That's not in any way to downplay the significance of the Koh Tao rape/murder. It was a terrible crime, and I hope whoever was responsible pays for it. But as far as danger is concerned, the full moon parties seem to be about part of the course as to what you have everywhere else in the world. People's desire to "protect people from themselves" is just a way of controlling other peoples lives. If you don't want to participate in this sort of thing, it's more than understandable. But by the number of people who do, there is obviously a lot of people who do. You shouldn't use this incident to push an agenda.

They pack up their packs next day and wander off elsewhere, never to return, but with a head full of memories of a crazy night on the beach under the full moon in Thailand.

The proliferation of so called "Full Moon Parties" away from Haad Rin Beach was getting ridiculous, and I'm glad they have been stopped. If younglings want to go crazy lets let them do it one day a month in a relatively safe environment, one which can be policed and secured easily enough. Haad Rin is the perfect spot for it..

Places other than Had Rin, half-moon, dark-moon etc are simply a chance for locals to try and get another bite at the tourist baht.

They tend to be under policed and less controlled.

I have been several times. Always left by 2 or 3am. Saw a few fights. Saw some drunk kids. Was offered pot.

The thing is.. Every complaint you have happens in other places as well. You may as well shut down every university in the world if you think this way. (perhaps with the exception of Jesuit or Muslim unis.

What is making me laugh (and cry) here is that there are numerous people banging on about the link between these parties and the sad deaths of the 2 English 20 somethings last month. If I remember rightly those 2 had been in a BAR and they had been focused on alcohol (check all the photos). There was a party on a beach with a guitar!

In short people using the Koh Tao incident as an excuse to ban these parties are a little like using an incident of drunk driving as a reason to lower the speed limit....just doesn't make any sense.

Well, actually. KPG was not known at all for parties when I first settled here.

In fact, Koh Phangan was not even on the map of Thailand at that time and

no one lived permanently on Koh Tao.

When I was a lot younger, people (just like some of the idiots here on TV) used

to tell me, if I don't like something, why don't I move. I moved. I travelled the

world and finally ended up on this completely unspoiled island with just over

250 inhabitants on 168 sqKM. Absolute paradise.

Then, a few years later, those same idiots followed, still using the same super

idiotic comment. If you don't like it, move. So again, I moved twice on the

island because I had party venues starting close to my home. Means music

till late in the morning, people throwing trash or pissing in my garden, people

complete disregard for other peoples privacy and property.

Now after 26 years, finally someone has an idea. A petty stupid idea. Ban

all the parties on the island apart from the Full Moon Party.

Apart from the full moon party which goes completely uncontrolled, without

organised security, at least the smaller parties, eg. Half Moon Party, Shiva

Moon Party, Sramanora Party, Jungle Experience or the many "Micro"

Parties like the Pirate Bar Party or the Party in Haad Yuan have to provide

their own security.

Most of the smaller parties are held on private land, not on the beach or

public land. So according to the article, there would be just a handful of

venues affected.

So reading this news, it doesn't looks to me as if the government would

ban too many parties and there is an option, get approval, BUY a licence ;-)

Cant believe that . It's ass about face, if they bring that rule in on KPG. There are many very well organised and excellent parties scattered all over the island . It's what defines KPG from everywhere else in Thailand People go there because of it . However the FMP is a total nightmare , nothing but trouble. 10's of 1000's of kids now going, all easy victims of the criminal elements that circle like sharks every time it is on, often coming from further a field than KPG itself.

FMP generates an unbelievable amount of money for all concerned local businesses and mafia types etc But if its SAFETY they are worrying about that's the party they should ban. Most the others don't cause much nuisances or danger to anyone. So they are blatantly pretending to care but really only worrying about money at the end of the day. They Probably wouldnt be able to stop the FMP if they wanted anyway, as it has developed a life of it's own with so much momentum it is pretty much an unstoppable event.

I love KPG and love the other parties but will avoid the FMP at all costs.....

Back to my point about the illegal raves in England, rural pubs and big city clubs. These aren't focused around alcohol. Rural pubs tend to be sit down, chat, socialise, low volume/no music, slow paced bars and community focused. Big city clubs go on until 6am and, when I was active as a DJ and clubber, only had licences until 2:30am. The number of people didn't drop and nobody was that bothered by the alcohol stopping. Indeed Bagleys (Kings Cross goods yard) was famous for the tea and burger van in the outside area. I remember many a nice time sat outside with like minded people at 3am having a cup of tea and, when not on appetite inhibiting drugs, a burger then heading back in to carry on. As an aside it was lovely to have a break from the music and a chat with your new friends. Finally the illegal raves. The crime reported was, most commonly, possession with intent (i.e. dealing drugs) and burglary. It was highly unlikely to be people attending the rave that were committing the burglaries but people taking advantage of the increased noise and numbers of people in the area as cover. Again this is what the police would commonly focus on (policing the local communities) and most would pass by without too much bother. At raves there was almost never alcohol for sale. People might bring a few cans with them but mostly they didn't bother. People could walk away from the music and socialise. At the time of the criminal justice act coming into force many of the crews who put these parties together were getting a list of friendly environments together (this is how Glastonbury started all those decades ago) that would allow them to operate with minimal impact.

This is where many people lack education. Truthfully most people lack education about alcohol. The statistics for alcohol are clear for all to see yet (like smoking) we continue to ignore the millennia of learning and carry on drinking (I enjoy a social drink but my days of drinking to get drunk are FAR behind me).

Sadly most people only read the mass media reporting on most illegal drugs and don't understand the true issues relating to them. Key to this would be lack of purity or effective dosing. Taking a pill in London at the height of the 90s, even from a known dealer, was a risk. It wasn't the risk of what the drug could do but the risk of impurity that was the issue. I took a fair few (only when out clubbing, never when DJing...too distracting) during my time and the worst I suffered was low dosages (i.e. duds). I had met people who had spent the night on a mixture of Ketamine & Speed which had been sold as ecstasy. The effect in the initial half hour is very similar then everything slows right down and becomes quite introspective. This is fine if that was where your mind was when you took the drug but quite disturbing psychologically if you were expecting to be bouncing off moon-beams all night! The other major risk was a lack of education. This is what killed Leah Betts. It is not surprising that her family pointed at the drug as being to blame but it you read the coroners report you will find she died due to over hydration. In short the water killed her. She had heard that you should keep well hydrated when taking a pill but she had taken it at home with friends and not in a sweaty nightclub bouncing up and down for 6 hours with 3,000 other people. If you were doing 6 hours of exercise you would expect to take on board water regularly and in small amounts. She had drunk 7 litres of water in 90 minutes and suffered hyponatremia which caused swelling of the brain.

As an example taking heroin is not, in itself, dangerous. It is highly addictive but not dangerous. The dangers with that come from needle sharing leading to HIV and blood infections and overdosing (again lack of eduation and adequate controls). The bigger issue with heroin is that it stops people functioning in society or being able to achieve the basics like eating and regular sleep. Then again this is the exact same problem with alcohol. I have had friends take heroin and quit. I have also know addicts take it to the grave. Just the same as alcohol.

As I said earlier people need to educate themselves properly before making cases against drugs (prescribed, over the counter or recreational).

This knee-jerk reaction from the government to this situation in Koh Tao is bizarre and very obviously a response to the lack of tourists coming to these islands at the moment. The incident in Koh Tao may well have had drugs involved but there is a high chance that these were ingested involuntarily whilst out drinking heavily. You really aren't going to take a pill and sit and listen to people playing the guitar. The issue of the full moon parties does need to be dealt with but mostly as so many people are jumping on the bandwagon, causing social issues in their environments and scrimping on true, effective, security.
