PHUKET: A motorcycle taxi driver was shot dead this morning (October 30) at the Wor Kor intersection on Thepkrassattree Rd, close to Rajabhat University Phuket, in what police believe was a case of road rage.

The shooting took place at about 9:30am in front of many witnesses, including the victim’s son, at a red light. The shooter casually got back on his bike afterwards and drove away, apparently in no hurry.

The shooting was caught on CCTV.

Called to the scene next to the Siam Commercial Bank Rajabhat Branch, police were able to identify the dead man as Chaliao Piyapanikul, 47, from Trang, who was still wearing a motorcycle taxi vest and was lying in a pool of blood.

Police found three 9mm bullet casings at the scene. Mr Chaliao died instantly when shot just above the left eyebrow.

Police examined CCTV footage which seemed to show the shooter and the victim arguing. The victim apparently told his son to get off the motorcycle and stay away, before the gunman shot him and then drove away toward Baan Kuku.

Mr Chaliao’s body was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital. Police are working on the identity of the shooter.

The gun made him a man for a second. Now he's been hiding like a girl.

The deceased asked his son to step away and then was shot in the face by some a-hole over what?

What the heck is the deal over here?

Some of these people kill others without even a second thought. Without even thinking about witnesses.

It is truly frightening to live in this country and not have a sidearm.

Yeah, more guns - that'll do it. That's like saying more cars will lead to less traffic.

I hope the motorcycle taxi guys get to the shooter before the police do.

Despicable.

RIP and I feel so sorry for this poor kid having to witness his fathers murder.

No Thai people would do a crime like this...........those Burmese people are eveywhere

Despicable. What a POS, over what, a few hurled insults resulting in loss of face?

No, its like saying that if traffic accidents are commonplace then its nice to be sitting in a big truck when someone slams into you.

No. Educate people to behave/drive properly then nobody needs guns and/or trucks. You're dealing with the symptoms, not the cause.

I think we need more "quality Thais"

All you denigrating Thailand, due to some crazy, stupid people, look at your own country, murders happen, Or do you come from a country without murders... Christians can teach, a thing, never heard anything so pathetic...............

RIP man. So unnecessary. So sad.

People said I was mad to leave ... I beg to differ. No country is perfect but I feel much safer where I am because there are too many ignorant people walking around with loaded guns. What a wonderful society - kids stabbing each other over university rivalry (and they are the educated ones), families murdering their own for land and money, police officers drinking off duty and murdering friends over childish arguments, tourists raped and murdered with little or no real investigation to catch the perps.

No I wasn't mad to leave but certainly those expats who remain could do with their heads examining.

The horrible side of Thailand is really rising to the top under this noble general. Might be time too leave.

The police suspect it was"road rage" however, this shooting has all the hallmarks of an "execution". The victim asked his son to get off the bike and stay away, which indicates the victim already was aware of the gravity of the situation.

What a shame such a beautiful country has such hideous people in it.

No the gun made him a coward in the first place, he was never a man.

My wife keeps warning me about this sort of thing.

She, a Thai, describes it as:

"The Bantam Rooster Syndrome" in Thailand, where lots of "LITTLE MEN" carry Big Guns in a forlorn attempt, to compensate for.....

certain other, short-comings.

Its the horrible side of humanity.. USA, son beheads his own mother, yesterday... This is the world we live in, sadly.......

What a country! Peaceful loving people.blink.png

Oh get off it! This happens in every country.

the world has not changed... we've just go global reporting and cameras on ever corner and everyone's hands.

Any reason that this was road rage and not, for example, a paid hit? Looked very calm and professional to me. As they say here, a business conflict in an unpaid debt?

What a country! Peaceful loving people.blink.png

Not so many where a professional hit man could do his job in broad daylight in front of witnesses, then casually ride off. Untouchable?

Thainess at play.

This blanket 'Thainess', suggesting ALL Thais, in response to every negative news item is getting as boring as the 'methinks' brigade saai.gif I know many of these motosai guys and the overwhelming majority are a very nice bunch. I'm seriously shocked by this. It does show how this country is so lawless when the shooter can do this so casually in broad daylight and simply ride away.

Did they ever catch the shooter of that woman hotel worker BTW? Or the multitude of others making headlines just about every week a year or so back?
