Buying Malaysian Dollars

Recommended Posts

Posted

I went to 4 banks yesterday in Chalong to buy some malaysian dollars. I was told by all 4 banks that they havent got any malaysian dollars in stock. None of the banks checked there stock or asked me how many dollars I wanted. Bizarre it was like it was company policy not to sell me foriegn currency. Anyone know a bank where I can buy some Malaysian Dollars and also some Dirhams.

I can't imagine anyone having Malaysian Dollars in stock. Did you check for Ringgit as well?

I asked for Malaysian Currency and also for Dirhams, no joy.

Moroccan Dirham?

My point being: if you go to any currency exchange with incorrect or incomplete information they won't be able to help you, and they won't care as well.

Go to any of the main branche offices in Phuket with the correct and complete information and if not on stock they can order for you.

Not at all.

You come with a question with incomplete and incorrect information, (not just once by mistake BTW, you mention Malaysian Dollars 5 times in your post) but I still give you the complete and correct answer. What more can one want?

Moroccan or United Arab Emirates Dirhams? Your best chance is to go to a main bank branch in Phuket Town in the morning, later in the day they will send their foreign currency harvest to Bangkok. Chances are you will have to order, don't think they get that much Malaysian Ringgit or any type of Dirham.

If you're passing through Hat Yai, then the Yong Dee or Kings Hotels are your best choices.

Both give the same rates and always have them in stock. Some of the small shops in town have tried ripping me off with very dodgy exchange rates so the two aforementioned hotels are trustworthy.

I would expect to find Malaysian Ringgit at the banks and exchange booths in Patong, Karon, Surin etc. as these are the obvious places where Malaysian tourists change their money. Same for U.A.E. Dirham as there are also quite a few tourists from U.A.E. around as well.

I do not think that the banks in Phuket Town send their surplus foreign currencies on a daily basis to Bangkok as moving money around is always risky and extremely costly hence banks try to avoid transportation as much as possible. Once a week maybe.

I think MYR is especially unavailable as it is restricted to use within Malaysia only in most cases. The private exchangers in border cities/hubs like Hat Yai are most likely to service this request for MYR.
