500,000 ya ba seized in Chaing Dao district

CHIANG MAI: -- About half a million methamphetamine tablets were seized from a pickup truck at a road checkpoint in Chiang Dao district of Chiang Mai Thursday morning by police and army troops.

Acting on a tipoff that a huge consignment of drugs was to be smuggled into Chiang Mai from the border with Myanmar, police and army troops set up a roadblock in Ban Pha Hong, Chiang Dao district, to look for the suspected vehicle.

A Toyota Mighty X pickup truck with the licence plate number phor bor 4015 showed up at the roadblock and the officials stopped the vehicle and asked for a search. They thoroughly searched the truck and found under its body a specially-built compartment.

When the body was lifted up, the officials found hidden in the compartment many packages of ya ba. About 500,000 pills were counted.

Two brothers in the car, Aek and Duang Thanomwitthaya, were held in custody. They claimed that they were hired to deliver the drugs to a buyer in Chiang Mai.
