HIS MAJESTY'S 87TH BIRTHDAY
Crowds mass at Siriraj for King

Well-wishers gather to pray for the health and celebrate the birthday of the monarch at Siriraj hospital where he is staying.

BANGKOK: -- Scenes of devotion as thousands of Thais celebrate His Majesty's 87th birthday despite cancelled public audience

Despite the cancellation of His Majesty the King's public appearance yesterday at his doctors' request, his loyal subjects gathered at Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital - as well as other locations around the country - to wish the monarch happiness, health and longevity on his 87th birthday.

Clinical Professor Udom Kachintorn, dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, affirmed that His Majesty was not ill but the King, who recovered from fever and colon inflammation only a few weeks ago, needed to rest. The cancellation was at the medical team's request, and the King himself had expressed his wish two weeks ago to undertake the public audience, he said.

On this auspicious occasion, many organisations and individuals participated in morning alms offerings or other merit-making activities and celebrations throughout the day before attending candle-lighting ceremonies that started at 7.19pm nationwide.

In keeping with tradition, people wore yellow shirts this week and particularly yesterday, as a gesture of respect and loyalty to His Majesty. The colour is associated with his birthday (a Monday).

The Royal Household Bureau early yesterday issued the 11th announcement on His Majesty's stay at Siriraj Hospital. It was in relation to an earlier announcement that His Majesty would grant an audience to other Royal Family members, civil servants and other members of the public at the Ammarintarawinitchai Throne Hall in the Royal Palace. However, after His Majesty was examined by doctors on Thursday night it was decided that he was not ready to travel, the bureau said.

Many people who had camped along the route to the Royal Palace since Thursday night went to Siriraj Hospital to wish the beloved King well and attend celebrations there.

The bureau yesterday also opened seven palaces including Klai Kangwon Palace in Prachuap Khiri Khan and Thaksin Ratchaniwet Palace in Narathiwat for people to sign good wishes for the King for one day.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, accompanied by his wife Naraporn, yesterday morning led the Cabinet members to sign a well-wishes book for the King at the Royal Palace, it was stated on the Government House website. Foreign envoys, officials and members of the public did the same.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom graciously sent the following birthday message yesterday: "It gives me great pleasure to send my warmest congratulations to Your Majesty on the occasion of your 87th birthday. The relationship between our two countries has lasted over 400 years, built on the enduring friendship between our people. I wish Your Majesty good health and happiness. Elizabeth R."

After US President Barack Obama emphasised the value of the two countries' ties on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday also spoke warmly about Russian-Thai relations when wishing the King well.

A sea of yellow-clad people including government officials gathered at Sanam Luang in the morning for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's ritual offering of food and other necessities to 188 monks.

The "Rak Phor" exhibition is being shown at the ceremonial ground to showcase His Majesty's achievements and projects, while state agencies and organisations have set up booths to provide general information and services to the public.

Many people also attended the BMA's spectacular evening light shows at seven sites along the Chao Phraya River including Santi Chai Prakan Park, Nagaraphirom Park and Wat Arun.

Elsewhere across the country, there were merit-making activities for the King including Thai soup kitchens in Nakhon Ratchasima's and Uttaradit's Muang districts. There were also a Red Cross-organised blood-donation campaign under the theme "Doing Good Deeds for the Father of the Nation" in Yala province and a luncheon for prisoners in Yasothon province.

BANGKOK: -- Though other topics were still shared among Thai social-media users yesterday, nothing was as overwhelming as the content related to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej's birthday and Thailand's Father's Day.

A few days ago, many people began changing their profile pictures or sharing photographs, emblems or symbols to celebrate the occasion. Some posted photographs of His Majesty taken at different times of his life, or images of themselves wearing yellow to symbolise their wishes for the beloved monarch, while some made merit for the King.

Other popular stories shared in social media included tales of taxi drivers and motorcycle-taxi drivers gathering to celebrate the day, and restaurants giving away free food and services.

Many people also posted songs and reports on how His Majesty has contributed to the country and how he serves as a living example.

Thiamjai Thongmuang, Thai Journalists Association manager, shared a picture of His Majesty at the opening ceremony of the association's building with the message: "Journalists are providers of knowledge and opinions, and speak up for others. Anything you publish in newspapers will spread quickly. It is important that you are careful, honest and just. Please remember that you bear a special responsibility."

On Thursday evening, many loyal subjects gathered near Siriraj Hospital so they could catch a glimpse of His Majesty, who was scheduled to grant public audience yesterday morning. However, the Royal Household Bureau announced that the royal audience would be cancelled according to doctors' recommendations.

Even so, well-wishers continued going to the hospital compound to wish their beloved King, and posting their photographs. Some even managed to take a photograph of His Majesty waving from his room in the afternoon.

@khajochi tweeted: "Today at 19.19, please tweet your wishes [for HM the King] on December 5 and use the tag #WeLoveKingTH. Make it a global trend."

Marm Viroj shared his location and wrote: "HM the King travelled thousands of kilometres to visit his subjects, today I will walk to Siriraj Hospital to wish HM the King. It's incomparable, but I am determined to do so. Please, no rain today."

Boom Wanvisa shared a photo of Thai expats celebrating the occasion in San Francisco.

UK in Thailand Facebook page shared a message from Queen Elizabeth wishing His Majesty a happy birthday, with a picture of her in a yellow blouse and hat.

"It gives me great pleasure to send my warmest congratulations to Your Majesty on the occasion of your 87th birthday. The relationship between our two countries has lasted over 400 years, built on the enduring friendship between our people. I wish Your Majesty good health and happiness. Elizabeth R," the message read.

Google's Doodle yesterday featured a Thai flag and yellow canna - considered to be King Bhumibol's flower. Online candle lighting is also available at www.ThaiBlessKing.com.

Since December 5 is also marked as Father's Day, many users shared pictures with their father and family.

@qAndrew, a Canadian expatriate, tweeted a selfie of himself in yellow with the message: "Father's Day lunch with my girls."

"Thank you, Dad" and "Love you every day" were a couple of popular messages from many social-media users.

Six illegal resorts in Petchabun raided

12-5-2014-10-49-17-PM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

Six illegal resorts in Lom Kao district of Petchabun province were raided on Friday by officials of the Internal Security Operations Command’s branch office in Petchabun.

Friday’s raid was the second by ISOC after a recent raid against nine resorts in the same district which were found to have encroached on forest reserves. The six resorts are located on the approaches to Phu Thap Berk, a popular mountainous tourist destination in the province.

Led by Colonel Kongsak Senaveerakul, chief of the intelligence unit of ISOC’s Petchabun office, the raiding team split up into six groups each targeting each of the six illegal resorts. They blocked the entrances to the resorts thus preventing the resort operators from escaping.

Some operators told the officials that they had the consent of KhaoKhor national park officials to build the resorts. But Mr Manop Sai-oonjai, director of Phitsanuloke forest management office, said that the land on which the six resorts are located does not belong to the Khao Kor national park but within the control of the Forestry Department.
