BANGKOK: -- Thousands of exotic fish species who’ve lived in the basement of an abandoned shopping mall were removed from their home yesterday as the building will be drained.

The New World shopping mall, a roofless, four-story building near Khaosan Road, had become one of Bangkok's unofficial, bizarre attractions after rain filled its basement and exotic species reproduced to turn it into an unusual aquarium.

Officials from the Inland Fisheries Research and Development Center said it would take two days to catch all the aquatic creatures and relocate them their facilities.

So they have been down there for 10 years. Would be interesting to do a study as to how they survived. But the pursuit of knowledge is not really the current governments strong suit

They will start showing up soon on Sukhumvit Soi 22 outside Queens Park Plaza. On a BBQ under a layer of salt.

10 years in a closed isolated environment

Would make an interesting evolution study for someone.

I've had fish in a pond for years and I never fed them. Even here in Thailand I nearly don't give extra food. Only for fun. They survive and multiply. Have you ever seen the amount of insects falling into a pool for just one night? You'll be amazed. And most fish feed also on other fish when they die.

"But the pursuit of knowledge is not really the current governments strong suit."

Wow. The stretch to find excuses for Thai bashing is amazing. The need to figure out how a bunch of fish survived in a pool of rain water ought to be a priority before all else.

Do you suppose that people drawn to this "bizarre attraction" probably threw food to the fish. Let's spend a few million baht to study this.

Uhhh...tourists and locals go there and throw them food. If you haven't noticed, feeding fish is a popular past time among Thais. They can also feed on mosquito larva

Maybe they could do a study on how the fish got there instead?

Oh wait we know that one too...Thais released fish in to the pond.
