BMA to build 100 new roads

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok City has planned to construct new 100 streets as the preparation for the city's expansion and solution to severe traffic problem. Land expropriation has been warned among the city people.

Director Banyat Auiyamwong who oversees the land expropriation work of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Public Works Department said the city has to construct more 100 roads to prepare for the increasing number of the city's population. The roads would help connecting roads and side streets together in order to reduce traffic problem.

The project might take more than ten years to finish, he said, however, there have been 14 new roads in the plan to urgently construct, such as in Soi Yasoob 1, Soi Ramkhamheang 40, following the edge of Rangsit canel, Wat KubornNawamin abd Wat KubornRamindra. The projects have been announced since three or four years ago but they have been postponed because of the lack of budget and personnel, said Banyat.

This is good news. From a transportation planning perspective Bangkok does not have a high enough percentage of land area dedicated to roads for the population density and this is one of the major reasons why traffic is so bad. Without creating new roads there is absolutely no hope of ever mitigating the problem. If the new roads are planned properly and executed properly this new initiative could actually make a difference.

Between my home and work, they have been working on the road for going on 2 years!! They have managed to do less than 1 km in that time. It's absolutely unbelievable! They took a perfectly good, but congested road, and turned it into a 2 year nightmare. When it's done it will mean less than 2 minutes of driving time on it before you 'fall off" and are back on the old road.

Poorest planning and management I've ever seen.
