Politicians in South involved in Samui bombing

BANGKOK: -- Royal Thai Police commissioner Pol Gen Somyot Phumphanmuang stated on Wednesday that several leading politicians in the South have knowledge and assisted suspects in the Central Festival Samui car bomb attack last week.

The national police chief affirmed the latest development in the investigation of the car bomb attack at a press conference today.

He didn’t elaborate the identities of these politicians but said the police investigators would adhere to evidence and witness accounts to deal with these former politicians.

He did not rule out insurgency, or other motives which the police have earlier established, but concentrated on politics.

He also said a redshirt suspect “M Redshirt” is still being detained by the military for questioning after a message posted on his Facebook indicating imminent bomb attack in Samui.

Who can argue that this guy isn't right.

It can be insurgency, or politics, or some other motives. Give the man a medal.

The usual BIB cover all the pockets briefing, it could be ... or ... maybe ... possibly ... or ... and so on.

He seems to be favouring politics, sort of, yet until little more than a day ago his own men in the area were sure it was a local conflict.

Is his summary based on fact and evidence or expediency ?

SAMUI ATTACK
Ex-MPs 'involved' in bomb blast

The Nation

Police deputy chief says politicians supported the attack; Phra Suthep slammed by Pheu Thai for hinting at Thaksin's role

BANGKOK: -- FORMER MPS with significant influence in the South might have been involved in the recent vehicle-bomb blast at Central Festival Samui shopping mall in the southern province of Surat Thani, two senior police chiefs said yesterday.

"We are confident that these politicians supported the bomb attack," deputy national police commissioner General Chakthip Chaijinda said yesterday.

He said it was suspicious that former South-based MPs had visited Surat Thani a week before the car bomb exploded at the shopping mall last Friday night, injuring many people.

"These politicians still have influence in the area," he added.

Chakthip said the bombers also clearly had links with the ongoing unrest in the deep South, given that the vehicle used for the bomb attack was stolen from Yala, one of the southernmost provinces.

He made these remarks following police questioning of more than 20 witnesses over the past five days.

"Of these witnesses, three have now been placed under military protection, police having established that they have kept contact with those involved in the deep South's unrest. So, we believe they may know something about the vehicle bomb at Central Festival Samui," he explained.

Police are now trying to locate a former security guard at the shopping mall who quit his job just before the blast, he added.

Chakthip also disclosed that recordings from security cameras showed a white Mitsubishi Triton pickup scouting the route for the Mazda pickup that was later to be used as the vehicle bomb.

"Clearly, these two vehicles headed up from the southern border provinces together. They moved in tandem along the seaside route from Yala to Songkhla, onward to Nakhon Si Thammarat, and then to Samui," he said.

"Between three and six suspects took part in the vehicle-bomb operation," he said, adding, "And one or more of them must have been female, so as to make officials feel the group was harmless."

National police commissioner General Somyot Poompanmoung, meanwhile, also said available evidence suggested that several former MPs in the South had given support and help to the vehicle-bomb instigators.

"We are handling the case in line with the evidence," he said.

Thaworn Senneam, a former deputy leader of the Democrat Party and co-leader of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), suggested that three politicians were behind the bombing incident.

"They have lost their [vested] interests, and they are anti-National Council for Peace and Order [the military junta]," he said.

He expressed confidence that the authorities would be able to nail down the culprits by the end of the month.

Thaworn said that with Somyot stepping in to take charge of the case, it should be possible to bring the mastermind to justice, too.

Following the bomb blast, Phra Suthep Prapakaro - former PDRC secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban - said "the man living abroad" was behind the incident, a comment that has attracted criticism from pro-Thaksin Shinawatra politicians.

Thaksin, a former prime minister, has been living overseas for years. He was ousted by a previous military coup in 2006.

Last year, the National Council for Peace and Order staged another coup, which removed the government formed by his sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, at the height of a political crisis.

At the time, the PDRC staged massive rallies against her government.

Pracha Prasopdee, a former deputy interior minister, yesterday said that as a monk, Phra Suthep should refrain from making any provocative comments.

"Don't speak in a way that will trigger a new round of conflict," he said, adding that all Thais were simply looking forward to peace and a general election.

Pheu Thai deputy spokesman Anusorn Iamsa-ard yesterday lashed out at Phra Suthep's speculation, saying that if the monk who is a former MP from Surat Thani knew who the mastermind was, he should tell the police or bring them to justice.

As a Buddhist monk, Phra Suthep should refrain from lying, as speaking an untruth was a sin under Buddhism, he said.

Deputy Government Spokesman Maj-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd said yesterday that evidence accumulated by the police would soon lead to the mastermind, but he did not pinpoint any individual or group of politicians.

If the good General Somyot doesn't soon come up with a little thing called court admissible EVIDENCE, then he should be removed from his job... but it will probably simply be to an inactive post. (So sad for Thailand!).

If you are so confident that politicians are involved, why aren't they in custody for questioning? M Redshirt is in custody and are thier different guidelines for little people and influential people? Could it be that the politicians are aligned to people like Suthep and Prayuth so no need to arrest them as we have a scapegoat already? Who are they and why not name them if they were reds thier pics and names would be splashed all over the place.

It basically means he has no idea. My money is on the Butler.

Both threads on this have very positive statements without names of course then there's a ' might ' and other less definite suggestions to fill in the blanks.

Very Chalerm, state you know what happened and who is involved but don't go any further and later, if necessary, don't expand on your initial comments because no one will call you out on it and demand an explanation.

Jatuporn is from Nakhon Sri Thammarat.

a redshirt suspect “M Redshirt” is still being detained by the military for questioning after a message posted on his Facebook indicating imminent bomb attack in Samui.

Mr. M Redshirt (too obvious?) posting the way he allegedly did on Face-book is one of the reasons that Red Shirts are called 'water buffalo'.

If you wish to attempt to malign Jatuporn Prompan, I suggest you be more factual.

He was born in Surat Thani, and moved to Bangkok at an early age. He has no connection to Nahkon Si Thammarat.

The police reference is to former MPs with significant influence in the South. Khun Prompan has as much influence in the south as you do.

Are you even aware of what was posted?

Nation Media reporrted that Colonel Winthai Suvari, spokesman for the NCPO, said The suspect had posted on that "a lot of stuff is being prepared for Surat Thani tonight". The intent of that post is open to interpretation. There is no statement in reference to a bomb, nor to a fire.

What's your point? Do you get your jollies from spreading innuendo and inaccurate information?

He said it was suspicious that former South-based MPs had visited Surat Thani a week before the car bomb exploded at the shopping mall last Friday night, injuring many people.

Very suspicious that southern based ex MP's were in the south a week ago. I guess once people are out of office they are placed in exile. (well that is true for some reds at least)

Chakthip said the bombers also clearly had links with the ongoing unrest in the deep South, given that the vehicle used for the bomb attack was stolen from Yala, one of the southernmost provinces.

Yes I can see the logic here. Anyone with a stolen pickup from Yala is clearly an insurgent and involved with creating unrest. Despite the fact that this act was supposedly done by former politicians, and please forget that that the insurgents are strongly against the last government. And strike the thought that people who are willing to blow up bombs for their cause, are quite unlikely to blow up bombs for their political opponents. because that logic does not apply here

"Between three and six suspects took part in the vehicle-bomb operation," he said, adding, "And one or more of them must have been female, so as to make officials feel the group was harmless."

We all know that a couple of guys in a pickup truck in Thailand will almost certainly be seen as suspicious. But a couple of guys in a pickup with a female is completely harmless.

Good opportunity to stitch-up some political enemies whilst taking the wind out of the RKK sails? ( assuming the RKK planted the bomb )

In other words, they still have absolutely no idea who is responsible.

They can't have it both ways; it's either the "Red Shirts" (highly unlikely) or the insurgents from the south or maybe even disgruntled employees.

Keep pursuing the evidence police and maybe you will arrive at an incontrovertible answer that may even be correct.

They seem to do this regularly - I can only imagine it's some kind of tactic they think will help flush out the real perps. Accuse a lot and see how they react or something. Devilishly clever - or they just like mouthing off as saying they don't know is too much a face loss.

Absolutely BS. The famous M Redshirt (don't they have any bloody fantasy) posted about the fire in Surat Thani!!

Psst, M redshirt posted about Surat Thani. Samui is in Surat Thani.

If I was going to blow a bomb in Hua Hin, I wouldn't write Prachaup Khirikhan (the province)

I presume our friend with an IQ of a cucumber would do likewise??

You wouldn't but many Thais would.

My students when asked where they live say Nakhon Pathom... They actually live in Sam Phran, Nakhon Pathom.

And the people organizing the attack or attacks (if the warehouse fire was not an electrical accident) would certainly know who in Surat Thani they were definitely trying to annoy and/or payback (Suthep), AND that Koh Samui is in Surat Thani, Suthep's province! Presuming the alleged Facebook post is genuine, then I would say that the someone doing the Facebook posting, knew exactly what was planned.

Dear Mr Chief of Police, I think you have turned the map upside down, they guys, you so desperately want to frame for this, have their stronghold in the north.

I will not go so far to say the cause lays in the north.

BUT !!! What the big " fill in at own choise" of the police say is "contradictus in terminus" ... ) A redshirt is questioneted ...

) SOUTH polititicians are involved

EVERYBODY knows that the SOUTH is as YELLOW as can be.

I live here (Trang) for more than 8 years. If any redshirt come on TV... they must keep calm not to ttrow a stone in it. I was 'friendly asked to put of a red t- shirt at several occasions, etc.

Rich... middle-class or poor al the same.

Just in case it is not obvious,

there ARE redshirts in groups in Surat Thani, many work in the construction industry seasonally,

and redshirt aligned political leaders, but they are vastly outnumbered and keep a lower profile of late.

That they resent their loss of connection to Bangkok power would be

a rancid taste in their mouths, low comparative numbers, or not

Jatuporn's mother still lives in Surat Thani, she is not amused with his work.

She has said as much explicitly. But I wouldn't be surprised he doesn't make

the occasional quiet visit home to see her.

Certainly M Reshirts post was foolish, in hindsight, but fits the zeitgeist of the times.
