Help Needed: Friend in Chiang Mai drugged, raped and beaten. Where to get help.

A very sad story unfolded to me as a friend told me she went to a pub to celebrate a friend's b-day and the last thing she remembers is being at the pub talking to a farang man and then waking up at a hotel naked, bruised and bleeding. She is naturally ashamed, scared and doesn't know what to do. What a terrible way to lose your virginity. I told her she should at least go to the hospital, the police (which I know unfortunately might not give a single sh*t). She can't remember what he looked like but I am thinking the hotel she woke up in should have some information about this rapist (I am sure this is not his first and not his last victim) via a sign-in and/or video footage.

Anyway does anyone have some information about care centers or crisis centers in Chiang Mai. Any other suggestions. She showed me the photos and they are pretty bad!

Thanks for your help with this.

A good start for her perhaps would be a hospital, almost any large hospital will likely do but CM Ram would be my choice, they in turn will be better able to point her in the right direction.

Also, CCTV is becoming more prevalent here and either the pub or the hotel may have footage?

Despite what you may think, it would be a good idea to notify the police, they take it quite seriously when it's a white western female that been attacked.

Good luck.

If this happens just now or up to 2 days earlier, tell her to go to any pharmacy and buy MADONNA, it is the next day contraceptive pill and works.

What happened was terrible, but now she needs to worry about pregnancy and AIDS.

Sorry....she needs to get into a hospital, and tell the Police about ASAP. Probably this predator is doing this very often.

Police should be notified unless she/her family decides to take steps to address the rapist themselves or via their agent.

Hopefully this is current and not something that happened a few days ago. She will need to get a rape kit done at the local hospital. She should also have them do a toxicology report. Most likely she was drugged. If the drug is in her system still, she needs to keep that report. If she showered and got rid of the evidence, most likely the police will not do much.

As others have stated, she needs to account which bar she was at, where she woke up. The hotel will have some records or hopefully security cameras.

The hardest part will be telling her parents but she must. I would advise that she go to the police station with her parents.

Was there a condom in the trash? She should also get a blood test for STD's, and a follow up in 6 months for HIV.

I would also recommend counseling and Suan Prhung.

All the best to her.

Get the police involved and check CCTV at the pub and hotel. Ask around the pub and someone might remember the guy and it's likely he has done this before.

As for the poor girl, she needs medical attention and will need on going support. Tell her that there is no shame in being the victim of an assault and I wish her well.

We hear her story...and if true...all the advice above is correct.

Benefit of the doubt.....and no man in any kind of bar should drug or beat a woman.

Did she go alone...to that bar (where?). I am afraid others may fall victim.

Can you tell us of the street that the bar was located? (Do not name the bar)

Thanks for your help! I convinced her to go to the hospital tomorrow. My friend is Thai if that matters. Her father is Thai and mother from U.K.

.

She should go now. Today. Not tomorrow. I don't know if they even have Rape Kits in Thailand, but swabs can be taken for DNA up to 72 hours, +/-, after the assault. Any nurse can take a swab.

But the sooner the better.

And request multiple swabs.

Loss of memory can be due to the drugs, or for psychological reasons. But memories sometimes return, especially upon seeing the person again.

You should call the police, and inform them you are calling the western media.

It may be too late, and beyond the abilities of the Thai police, but rape often leaves DNA evidence that can be used to identify the rapist. I hope this guy can be found and dealt with 'appropriately'.

Hospital and then Police (they will advsie what she needs to do) - and then get Counselling. This happens far too often - and far more often than is reported. Happened to the daughter of a friend of mine back home - he was never caught. Rohypnol is usually the drug used - a small amount sneaked into a drink. Advice to all girls/women - never go to a bar/pub/public place and leave any drink on table/chair etc, and do not let anyone else buy you a drink and bring it to you (unless you know them personally). Let them pay for a drink, but you only drink what you see mixed/opened - and then keep it in your hands til it is finished. These days (in west) you will see girls drinking out of sealed cups with straws - stops anyone 'doing' them. Hope they catch the (self-deleted) and he rots in a local jail for years.

"Police first! They need a chain of forensic evidence."

Forensic evidence is gained at a hospital. So you cannot file a report without evidence. Hospital first, police second. Usually go to the Police with family or a lawyer. Never should a woman go to the police alone.

These are rather serious allegations. If true, the perpetrator needs to be called to account. Does the victim even know that she's been the victim of a serious crime? She needs to cooperate fully with the authorities so that the criminal can be brought to justice. As has already been recommended, she needs to go to the hospital like yesterday. I hope they can catch the scumbag. I'm sure this poor woman is not the first victim and won't be the last if the guy isn't apprehended pronto.
