I must be one of the very few who think anything done along beach road jomtien is an improvement on whats there, i think beach rd pattaya is great.

What was there before was rubbish, so may very well be an improvement.

What was there before in Pattaya wasn't so bad it had to be replaced. It could have been improved without destroying the shade trees, removing most of the seating, and making the traffic too fast for safe crossing. Also, the construction work is shoddy, and blocked the water drainage, which means the rain washes the beach away.

How long has the Jomtien Beach walk been there ? Because it has a nice atmosphere the way Pattaya Beach was before they ruined it. So now they are going to tear it up, cut trees and put in another glorifies road that will start washing away. Why ???

Did they construct these "steps to the beach" to accelerate beach erosion? I am assuming that is the case given that we certainly did not need steps leading down to the beach. Congratulations to the designer of this FUBAR project. The steps to the beach are facilitating beach erosion, as apparently planned

I have noticed that a few old-growth trees remain standing. Given the "plan," that must be a mistake. Those trees are holding soil in and providing shade! We apparently cannot have that on either Pattaya Beach or Jomtien Beach.

Does anybody know if the City has plans to introduce any places to sit? We had those places in the past. Now they are all gone. Thais, of course, just bring a matt with them and sit on the ground on the pathway (mai pen rai).

I suppose that all of this is part of the FUBAR plan, and is based on the following goals: create a design that destroys what was once a beautiful park area dominated by gorgeous old-growth trees; create a design that removes all shade; create a design that does not provide places to sit (except on a paid beach chair or on that ugly ship-like thing in the full sun); create a design that tears apart almost immediately; create a design that is extremely ugly (freeway) design; create a design that facilitates flooding and demands cleaning every day to remove sand; and create a design that facilitates beach erosion.

I suspect that they did not expect to get caught out this year, but we have had late rain, and that has exposed the obvious faults in their "planning". I hope they have a money-back guarantee with whoever is doing the work................haha ? What a waste.

"Would get undermined?" That assumes that it is not already undermined. I was going to take some pictures today, but decided not to do that. If you go down past the "steps" one soi 7 (which is in places already undermined) and take a close look at the next one going south, you will see that is is already cracking and separating....very large and wide cracks. This entire FUBAR project needs to be redone, starting with removing all of the "steps to the beach", replacing them with places to sit in the shade, and planting hundreds of shade trees that are halophytic (salt tolerant). The current design is a total failure, IMHO. It was designed for palm trees and cars--not for humans (except humans who are benefiting financially from the FUBAR project).

Yes, the new walkway in Jomtien is horrible. What a total FUBAR project! It would be hard for me to design a more people/nature unfriendly walkway. They removed almost all of the old-growth trees that provided shade and helped hold the soil in place (not to mention, providing beauty). And they removed all of the places to sit in the shade, forcing people to search for alternatives. Thais do not seem to care that there are no places to sit. They just throw down mats all over the now filthy walkway. If the idiots who designed this stupid project thought that getting rid of all the shade and seating areas was going to generate more money for the beach-chair vendors, they made a mistake. When the hot season arrives, nobody will be able to tolerate the walkway. What a mindless, destructive and expensive development project.

Took a few snaps yesterday. Love those stairs down into a hole below beach level.... is the plan to have a "mini Grand Canyon" attraction? Are they supposed to be fish ladders? And the undermining up near Family Mart near Silver Sand... Shall we set up a pool as to how long till majority of this mess collapses?

When will they stop the insanity?  They butchered over 30 old-growth trees over the past month.  I was going to post pictures but it is just too depressing.  They have no idea how to trim a tree.  By topping the trees (cutting the heads off) and cutting most of the branches off, they are inviting disease and maximizing the probability that branches will grow back in a weakened state, making it more likely (not less) that they will fall off.  Many of the trees are simply being completely uprooted in order to plant palm trees (big mistake if erosion and shade are of any concern, but of course they seem to want to remove all shade and cause an erosion problem).

Yes it seems they really really don't like the native trees..we had the excuse before that they where blocking the floodlights and CCTV cameras

now they are "Killer tress"

I was told this is the tree (091) that killed the elderly foreigner not long ago...... its been beheaded for its crime.

If they could I bet they would like to cut every tree down in Chonburi and

replace then with a Palm trees.....

Palm trees have very little shade...And are just not all that interesting

If you go to Soi 9 (or near it) and walk south, you will see that in some areas all of the old-growth trees (which have extensive root systems) have been destroyed.  In their place they have planted palm trees (which do not have extensive root systems).  Just a reminder that for decades Jomtien beach had 4-5 rows of gorgeous old-growth trees that provided massive shade and mitigated soil/beach erosion.   If sustainable means meeting our needs without impairing the opportunities of future generations to meet their needs, what they have done is a prime example of unsustainable development.  They apparently want to rid the beach of all of the old-growth trees.  That will cause massive beach erosion.  FUBAR.

I am afraid that you are correct.  And to make matters worse, as you can see in the above picture, they are putting up stainless steel barriers to prevent people from sitting down.  It all makes me want to vomit.

Well they can try with the barriers,I don't suppose they will last long and the kids might like them as a climbing frame

 most people I saw yesterday just took a mat and sat on the sand or on the walkway where ever there was some shade left.

It is a real shame that they removed all the places to sit  just like they did on Pattaya beach   admittedly the  old concrete benches and chairs where in a bad state of repair and did often attract the down and outs and wino's +scabby soi dogs   ( all are still there now just not on benches )

The "tetsakit" still chase away the beach hawkers but could have been better used to "move along" the undesirable bench sleepers + scabby soi dogs instead. IMHO
