Five Bangkok districts close to Suvarnabhumi airport may be developed into a new town

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) plans to develop five districts in the eastern part of the capital as a new town after Suvarnabhumi Airport is officially opened.

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin (อภิรักษ์ โกษะโยธิน) said the opening of the new airport should help bring growth to the five districts of Lat Krabang (ลาดกระบัง), Prawet (ประเวศ), Min Buri (มีนบุรี), Klong Sam Wa (คลองสามวา) and Nong Jok (หนองจอก) where the new town was planned.

Mr. Apirak said the BMA also will survey effects on the ways of life and businesses of people in Don Muang area after Suvarnabhumi becomes the main airport.

This will be fun to watch as the TRT have already announced that THEY will be developing a new "province" very similar to this, with the main difference being that the PM and friends will be running the economic zone for the next 8 years (regardless of election results). It looks like the possibility for another BMA vs. TRT showdown coming up.

I thought it was supposed to become a new province. :o Taking some from Sammut Prakan and some from BKK.

That's my point. You have the TRT plan and the BMA plan. They do not include the same areas and the city government's would be different. When the TRT came out with their plan last year, the BMA was very upset about the potential loss of tax revenues. Now, there are now two plans with the TRT and BMA, once again, facing off against each other. Anchored by the new airport, there is a great deal of money at stake.

Who want to move to the new town to face the aircrafts noise. :o

Actually, a great number of people, albeit not in the immediate area of the runways. There are many airport related support industries that are moving in and along with this, people who want to live relatively close to where they work, especially if they have been living near Don Muang. In addition, the affected areas are already large and highly populated.

Control of this city/province/zone is about lots of money. The TRT plan encompasses an area of over 500 sq. Km. with an existing estimated annual tax base of over THB 40 million. Once the airport becomes fully operational, tax revenues will greatly increase. In addition, a fully operating Bangkok airport will increase the opportunities for corruption. Whoever controls this zone will be much, much better off for it.
