Two that I recommend:

Fuzzy Ken's (Opposite Central Plaza Mall on Prajak Rd; 3 min walk from central bus station; 7 min from railway station). 6 days, early till late; closed Su. A wonderful hybrid: a restaurant serving Western food, a used bookshop and a shop selling hard-to-find Western foodstuffs (Bovril, Marmite, Heinz beans, Vegemite, meat pies). A Brit, Ken is a terrific source of local info. Serves beer and wine. Great website. Free Wi-Fi. Huge breakfast, 165 baht.

The Good Corner Restaurant and Bar, Nutti Park, Prachak Rd (Just around the corner from the "bar street"; across from UD Residence), ☎ +66 98 2065125. Daily, 09:00-23:00; kitchen closes 22:30. Owned by a Danish lady, serves breakfast, pizza and Thai food. Great quality and decent prices.

The Bookhouse and coffee shop, near prajak lake. The Irish Clock restaurant.1 block from the Mall.Go to udonmap you will find them. Many good places to eat at Udon.

The Centara is the high end hotel attached to the Central Plaza. Breakfast buffet around 300 baht but excellent both Thai and English.

IMO The Bookhouse Nong Sim Lake is the best for Breakfast/Lunch/dinner, also The corner Bar Nutty Park serves a very good Breakfast

The Boathouse menu looks very good. I stay t The Centara when in UDT so I know that breakfast. Also it opens at 6 AM and the Boathouse isn't open (they say) until 8:30. I can't wait that long for breakfast.

TRY THE IRISH CLOCK. OLD ENGLISH STYLE PUB, TRADITIONAL FOOD, GOOD PRICES

No where near as good as it used to be, and the prices have just been increased and in my opinion very overrated and disappointing.

for lunch/dinner..........................Goodwill restaurant at Nongsamrong.

Great selection, thai , pizza, farang food. Very reasonable prices. Menu's in Thai and English .Great relaxing setting.....................location may be difficult to find if you ONLY know central Udon area.

I went to "Chef's Table" last night for the first time, which is Thai managed and Thai & farang food. He's a proper Chef and well travelled, worked in a couple of 5 star hotels, speaks good English if that's a requirement for you. The food was great, reasonably priced, and the beer is cheaper than farang places. It's very quiet and I hadn't noticed it before (previously the building was Crocs, and before that The Office) which is opposite Nutty Park. I'll go back again as I enjoyed the experience, and also he needs the business. Great service too. I can't understand why I never noticed it before as that's my stomping ground

Example price: 2 fish with chips 149 baht, Large Leo 70 baht. I had eggs benedict which had a decent salad with it. I'll stop there as I don't want to sound like a promotion, but glad I found another local place for when you're bored of where else to go. Fuzzie Kens is also a good place, but his food is not to my taste. The Danish place mentioned in previous posts is good also, and just across the road, though on a normal day I would go to a Thai place for food like Perm Boon (sp?), which is on Pho Sri road not far from the traffic lights after the bus station (turn right from lights if bus station is on your left, and less than 100 metres), which has lightening fast food preparation and very reasonable prices. I've never seen farangs in there ever, but some of the staff can speak a little English if you need it, which you probably wouldn't if just ordering food from a menu.

I been chefs table and it was nice last time but no joke 2.5 hours wait for food and had 3 customers in there. Waitress told us its like that all the time and customers are prepared to wait or bad luck. Had two tables walk out when we were there. Very fawlty towerish. Cudnt help feeling sorry for them that the chef or someone was away or there was some problem but they wudnt admit it. Staying close by and as it turns out closed Tuesdays anyway

The guy at Chef's table last night told me that he'd lost 5 staff (he called then Chef's, but think he meant something like an apprentice). I asked why, and he said because they either get bored because things are slow, or they learn what they need and then go start their own place in another area. That's only one side of the story though, so interpret however feels right as I don't know the truth of it.

But yeah, the food doesn't come that fast - it comes correct. If looking for drive through speed, then I would recommend the aforementioned perm boon Thai restaurant, as it's on your table within a minute or so.

Edit: I'd say for us it was about 20 minutes with 3 of us but no other customers.

For breakfast and during the day, another great alternative is Coffee Corner just 3-4 minutes walk from Central Plaza. Come out of the Plaza, turn left, take the first right (which also leads of the bus station) and it is about 100m on the left. The lady owner has great English and will adjust the menu to please.

Not open night time? Know what time she opens for breakfast? Thanks mate :-)

That indeed is a good place for breakfast, you have to know about it because it's not in a street were one normally would walk so much.

I know this might be a tad too late, Kenny. But noticing you're online I have to share this. I highly recommend The Diary Restaurant.

It's run by a Nui (the excellent chef) and Karl. They have got an extensive menu ranging from American, Italian, Mexican, European and the list goes on.

From the time I discovered this gem of a restaurant, I have been a regular so does friends to whom I'd recommended.

It's down a small soi along Udon Dutsadi Road. You can find the exact location in udmap.

Avoid Samphan Fish & Chips though.

I would far rather eat in Sampan Fish and chips, who sell excellent food rather than that jumped up cafe called Diary with no ambiance what so ever and miles from anywhere!!
