Fishing boat operators in Songkhla facing labor shortages

SONGKHLA, 13 July 2015, (NNT) - Fishing boat operators in Songkhla are facing labor shortages because illegal workers fled the province to avoid officials' inspection.


The Port in-Port out Control Center in Songkhla yesterday reported normal fishing activity in the province's waters. However, several fishing boat operators were facing difficulty, as many of its crew who are illegal migrant workers have returned home.

The government's hard-line policies designed to address the European Union Illegal, unreported and unregulated issue have scared away illegal foreign workers in Songkhla.

One of the operators said he had been facing labor shortage problem since the registration period for migrant labors ended at the end of June. He, as well as many other operators, could not replace the workers who had left the boat.

The affected fishing boat operators are currently asking the Ministry of Labor to consider opening another round of alien worker registration, in order to recruit more helps.

Money Lending Gang Members arrested by Pattaya Police

PATTAYA: -- Three members of an illegal money lending gang were arrested by Pattaya Police on Saturday following an incident on Friday which saw a Toyota Minivan damaged, allegedly by the gang, who were looking to collect payments from the female owner of the vehicle.

“Tomboy” Late Opening Pub raided by Police in South Pattaya

PATTAYA: -- Just before daybreak on Saturday a selection of Police from various divisions in Pattaya, Chonburi and Bangkok, conducted a raid on a Pub, mostly staffed by “Tomboys”, which was suspected of being open and selling alcoholic beverages well after its permitted operating hours.

10 N. Korean soldiers breach border, return after warning shots

Pattani roadside bomb explosion wounds two rangers

PATTANI: -- Roadside bomb explosion wounded two army rangers while they were on a patrol to give protection to teachers in Yaring district of Pattani.

Yaring station police said the bomb attack happened about 8 am Monday while a unit of rangers was escorting a group of teachers going to schools on the Phumi-Muang Wan road in Yaring district.

The homemade bomb explosion injured the two rangers on the heads, but the escorted teachers were not hurt.

They were rushed to Pattani hospital.

List of judges opposed to draft charter submitted

BANGKOK: -- Senior Supreme Court judge Sriamporn Salikup on Monday said he and Supreme Court judge Somchart Thanyawinitkul submitted the list of 2,079 judges and the second open letter opposing a key point in the draft charter to the Office of the Judiciary of Thailand for passing on the draft writers.

The judges are against a provision in the draft that would allow judges receiving disciplinary punishment by the Judicial Commission to appeal such decisions with the Administrative Court.

The list and open letter were submitted to Pattarasak Wannasang, secretary-general of the Office of Judiciary of Thailand, at 8.30 am Monday at the office of Courts of Justice.

The list and the letter were then handed to Payung Chusong, Superior Court judge at Pattaya Provincial Court to further propose to Constitution Drafting Committee Chairman Borwornsak Uwanno during the Committee’s meeting on structure and authority of Court of Justice.

The meeting is being held at Asia Pattaya hotel in Pattaya, Chonburi. The list and the letter are expected to be handed within noon, Sriamporn told The Nation.

PHUKET: -- A staggering 69 per cent of foreigners living in Phuket or visiting the island receive little to no warning about the dangers of dengue and how the disease is transmitted, according to the results of the latest online poll by The Phuket News.
