arrived in Thailand at the begin of June and within 3 days developed a bad cough, lasting for weeks. worse, I also lost my voice completely for 4 1/2 weeks.

Had some treatment in the International hospital in Bangkok and the cough cleard after antibiotic treatment.

the voice came back 2 weeks ago, but not 100%. as soon I try to speak a little louder or speak on the phone for an extended time, it get's worse again.

should I just keep waiting or should I see an ear, nose, throat specialist? If yes, is the Bangkok Pattaya hospital a good bet?

I want to add, that although my cough is gone, I have somewhat breathing problems since and get very easy exhausted.

You mention Bangkok. And I think the smog has played a part both in your initial infection and now. My advice, get out. If not you will likely need to adopt a good regime such as limiting time outside and ensuring you sleep in a clean room with light air conditioning.

Can you clarify what the "somewhat breathing problems" are? As this is important.

There is a viral respiratory infection going round Thailand now that features sore throat and prolonged cough, many people have gotten it. Treatment is just symptomatic unless complications set in - which is where the "trouble breathing" concerns me.

i had a similar issue once - except the cough was not bad but just minor - losing my voice easily, irritated throat, and it turned out to be GERD.

oddly, i never had any real heartburn sensation (or at least i was not aware of it). local doctor gave me omeprazole which helped a little. some weeks later, back home things got worse so they did a gastroscopy and it seemed my oesophagus and stomach were inflamed. ever since i take Pantomed 40mg every day and have no more issues.

i'm not saying you have GERD, a doctor will find out what u have, but my symptoms were loss of voice, tickly cough, moderate irritation of throat.

too much spicy food in my case combined with sleeping too fast after supper, often after having a beer or two (not used drinking beer/carbonated drinks).

While your lungs are recovering keep well away from smokey environments and no cold drinks. Give your lungs a good chance to recover. Little exercise walking in the cool part of the day to assist your lungs to fully function again. We have look after our lungs. All the best.

Good advice but Bangkok is a smoky environment.
