RAYONG: -- Rayong provincial hospital reported to the Ministry of Public Health today that it has detected a suspected Mers patient after he was found to return from South Korea and had sickness with symptoms similar to Middle East Respiratory syndrome (Mers).

Rayong hospital director Dr Prasit Thongsadayu said the 27-year-old patient was admitted to hospital this afternoon with high fever, diarrhea and was extremely exhausted.

Doctors suspected him to contract the Mers disease and then isolated him at a special ward for respiratory patients for observation.

Besides, he said, one of his friends was also quarantined after he was said to share the room with the patient.

Investigation revealed that the patient fell sick after returning from South Korea a few days later.

He said however that the patient is now merely suspected to contract Mers but needed to be isolated as a precaution to prevent the disease from spreading.

Blood samples were collected along with body liquids for test at the Medical Science Centre in Chonburi, he said.

Meanwhile deputy permanent secretary of Public Health Dr Surachet Sathitniramai said result of the blood test was expected to be known tonight.

He also said that until now authorities still do not shut Rayong hospital as Mers is not easily contracted.

Besides he added no new patient is detected in South Korea now.

Hospital staff are now advised to wear surgical masks, as well as the patient’s relatives were also asked to do so.

RAYONG: -- A 27-year-old patient returning from South Korea and fell sick with symptom similar to the deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers) is now confirmed to be sick with seasonal flu, not Mers.

Director-general of the Department of Disease Control Dr Siphon Mekthon revealed today that laboratory test of the suspected patient isolated at Rayong hospital’s special ward for respiratory patients showed negative result, meaning he contracted seasonal flu or which is called influenza A.

Latest report said the condition of the man is improving satisfactorily, but doctors still needed him to have more examination to make sure he has fully recovered, he said.

He said authorities are still looking for three other friends who returned from South Korea along with him.

The three friends have visited the patient before returning to their home provinces in Sisaket and Ubon Ratchathani provinces.

He said two friends in Sisaket are still not yet found, but another who returned to Ubon Ratchathani was reported to have died.

But he said public health authorities were inquiring information from health officials in Ubon Ratchathani to check who he was and whether he has been dead or not.

He asked the public not to trust rumour as it might be false information.

He said doctors are still observing the condition of another man at Rayong hospital. He was reported to share the same room with the patient.
