Phongthep visits Pheu Thai politicians jailed for libel
The Sunday Nation

BANGKOK: -- Former Pheu Thai Party MP Phongthep Thepkanjana yesterday visited party spokesman Prompong Nopparit and former party MP Kiatudom Menasawat who have both been sentenced to one year in jail for libel.

The Supreme Court on Friday ruled that Prompong and Kiat-udom were guilty of libel and sentenced them to one year in jail for insulting former Constitutional Court president Wasant Soipisut.

Phongthep led other Pheu Thai Party leaders to visit the duo at the Bangkok Remand Prison.

Phonthep said he had sympathy for both, as they had been working together. He said he had not expected the Supreme Court to issue such a ruling because libel cases against most politicians have resulted in suspended jail terms.

"From now on, lawyers would have to take this ruling as a norm. If this is the case, politicians must be careful of what they say,'' he said.

After the visit, Phongthep said both Prompong and Kiat-udom were in high spirits and were able to sleep and eat in jail.

Since the prison allows prisoners to have one visit per day, the Pheu Thai Party must arrange an appointment with families of both politicians to visit them at the same time, he said.

To save a lot of time and money, wait until they are all inside then slam the door and lock it ! biggrin.png

So Why is the masquerading monk not in the slammer for publicly calling for the kidnapping of politicians and the threats of safety of their family's? surly this is by far much more serious than insulting some hi-so. Oh this is ok if you have the right color shirt on huh.... real justice herepost-4641-1156693976.gif

I am not going to argue with you ait, in fact I agree with you 100%. I would lock him up as well, in the same cell as the PTP guys, just to make it interesting.

Just because I don't post comments like - but, but Suthep ! does not mean I don't think he should pay for his crimes.

There are quite a few waiting to have their charges heard for inciting criminal behaviour. Logically, the cases from 2010 would be heard before those from 2014.

Cool happy you see this person for what he is, and the sharing of cells to make it more interesting.clap2.gif

Unfortunately you have misinterpreted my question as a "but but Suthep" statement, when rather it was a question in contrast as to the seriousness of the 2 separate statements made by the people involved and why are 2 people being prosecuted and gaoled when the far more serious statement IMO by another is allowed to walk? I wonder just if any what laws were broken by his very public by calls and have they even been looked at legally?

I agree Suthep should be in jail too but so should terrorist like jatuporn who advocated the burning of BKK. Fact is there are many more who should be in jail especially on the PTP side.

In general HiSo's dont go to jail this time they did because the guy pushed his luck. I wish they did this more often punish people harder who constantly appeal even when they got a good deal.

Interesting points.

Sort of brings up the balance of fair justice and disrespect for the court (really meaning of course, the concept of respect / disrespect for the whole purpose and process of law as a respected and critical tenant of building and maintaining a civil society).

Fair points, the same rules / application of the rules should apply to all.

If we're going to quote individual people / events, then what about the red thugs who publically gave out the personal phone numbers of judges and their family members?

Good points, however perhaps some might like to revert back to the many very public comments that prompong has made.

Many of his comments are serious lies and twists of the truth, intended to cause serious mischiefs and serious false beliefs.

Don't disagree with you Aussie - in fact agree with you, they all deserve to be tried and if convicted actually punished.

The difference is these guys defamed a member of the judiciary. He filed charges. They were given a slap but pushed their luck and appealed and now it's all backfired. They did push their luck whilst on bail to.

Suthep, those who called for the kidnapping of Prayut's daughters, Jatouporn, Nat, Arisman who all incited violence and arson; and yes, Thaksin with his inflammatory videos of 2010 should all face the legal consequences of their actions.

The difference being that they need to be prosecuted by the state through the OAG and prosecutors, And we've seen how reluctant they are to bring charges against any hiso elite, politician, celebrity.

That's true. But, he's only been charged, convicted and punished for this one defamation.

Some of his comments during his time as spoken were lies or twists of the truth calculated to inflame people against those opposing PTP. But, he has not been investigated or charged with any offence appertaining to those.

They were guilty of contempt of court. A serious crime in most countries, Suthep has not been accused of this offence, so your post is irrelevant.

"Phongthep led other Pheu Thai Party leaders to visit the duo at the Bangkok Remand Prison."

Seems they are more comfortable visiting jails than court houses.

I have to admit though it is good to see criminals where they belong. Lets hope the scoundrels that threatened to kidnap Prayuts daughters "dead or alive" are held to account as well though I wont hold my breath.

Of course they had an excuse for those threats claiming it was "merely the result of frustration".

I thought that was the defence for rape?

Predictable from you regardless of the circumstances. You are simply not a fan of Phra Buddha Issara and stick it to him whenever possible !!!!! Why do you not have the same Zero tolerance for Jatuporn and the other rouge North Western Amart supporters?
