Chinese reports say man attempts to set fire on plane

BEIJING (AP) — A man attempted to set a fire on board a Chinese flight early Sunday, but was restrained by passengers and crew members and taken into custody, the aviation authority said.

It was the latest in a rash of dangerous incidents aboard Chinese flights, including passengers opening emergency exits and fights between flyers and crew members.

The attempted arson occurred at around 1:00 a.m. Sunday aboard a Shenzhen Airlines flight from the city of Taizhou to Guangzhou near Hong Kong, the Civil Aviation Administration of China said.

It said an investigation was underway but gave no other details.

Official broadcaster CCTV and other state media reported that the pilot issued a mayday call and the plane was guided into Guangzhou airport. Slides were deployed and 95 passengers and nine crew members were evacuated. Two people were injured.

The incident appears to point to a serious breakdown in security at Taizhou airport. China bans the carrying of cigarette lighters and flammable substances, including spirits, aboard all flights.

Guangzhou airport police and Shenzhen Airlines said they had no additional information, including the man's possible motivation.

That actually happened before around 2004 (+/- a few years) on a Chinese flight, where a guy threatened to light up a bottle of alcohol (not the liquor type of alcohol) with a cig lighter.

That's what started the Chinese ban on carry on liquids. For a while, they allowed you to take a swig out of your water (after they smelled it) to prove it was actually water, but soon realized that was a farce.

My first flight after it happened, they made me open my can of Coke Light, and they took a whiff before handing it back to me. I politely declined and had them bin the full, open can.

The passengers and crew spat it out

Possibly, but I live in China and can tell you urination is another 'public' pastime... and much more efficient on fires.

You ever pee on a campfire?

They'd have to throw the plane away.

All commercial aircraft carry a variety of Fire Extinguishers, Halon and Water . No need to spit or urinate.

Time swap-out the airline or the wife (or both)?

150 or so counts of attempted murder plus terrorism charges, etc. I'm thinking he MIGHT get a death Penalty. PRC kind of leading the race in that regard.
