Prawit urges top brass to drive the country forward



BANGKOK: -- Deputy prime minister and defence minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan today urged military and police top brass to help drive the country forward and bring about national unity in the country.

He said what they do does not mean for any particular individual, but for the country, the people and the Monarch.

Gen Prawit’s statement was made as military and police top brass came to wish him happy birthday with flowers one day ahead of his 70th birthday anniversary on August 11 at the First Infantry Regiment of the Royal Guards this morning.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha also came to join the will wishers at Gen Prawit’s home inside the army area.

He told reporters on arrival that he has brought with him his “heart” to give to Gen Prawit, the former army chief.

Other top brass included army chief Gen Udomdej Sitabutr, interior minister Gen Anupong Paochinda, commerce minister Gen Chatchai Sarikalya, assistant army chief Gen Preecha Chan-o-cha, national police chief Gen Somyot Poompunmoung, and former armed force chief Gen Boonsarng Niempradit.

Gen Prawit said the past one year has seen many changes which he attributed to sacrifices to work by the prime minister.

But he said he had only joined the cabinet this year and was determined to work for the benefit of the country and the people.

He urged as his well wishers to help drive the country forward to bring unity back saying it was not for any individual, but for the country, the people and the Monarch.

What an unfortunate coincidence that the assistant army chief is called Gen Preecha Chan-o-cha. It makes it sound like he is related to PM Prayuth Chan-o-cha and that he is benefitting from nepotism. This is exactly the sort of thing that Prayuth did the coup to stop occuring. He should make it clear that Preecha is not his relative otherwise it truly is a nonsensical situation.

There are only three things that need doing, and need doing without compromise to bring the country forward.

1. Annihilate corruption at all levels, both government and local body, nationwide.

2. Clean up the police force. Recruit more police officers. Ensure they enforce all laws, all the time, against all law-breakers. No exceptions, no compromises.

3. Change the education system and attitudes within it. Employ experienced, passionate and highly qualified educators to make the decisions. Army officers and politicians know squat about education. It may be time to swallow some Thai pride and get a team of overseas experts.

Do it. Do it now. Do it properly.

What does Prawit want the "military and top brass" to actually do?

He needs to spell it out for them. It's not like they are particularly bright.

The last "elected government" chose as its PM a woman with no political experience at all and that reason for that was her name only.

She had no ideas of her own, rarely attended parliament, appointed herself as defense minister yet had no experience yet you believe that her government was better than this one?

One of the election promises was to stamp out corruption. Did that ever happen?

Her brother promised the Thai people would all be rich in 6 months, Did that ever happen?

Her Brother was certainly 450% richer but the majority of "his" supporters are certainly deeper in debt now than they have ever been. Was that a success for an "elected government"?

The Shinawatras are not running the country. The military are, and have been for well over a year. 'But, but Thaksin' doesn't wash on this thread which is not about the Shinawatra family.
