Putin seeks international cooperation to resolve conflict in Syria

NEW YORK: -- The Kremlin is evaluating whether to join the US, Britain and France in the air campaign against ISIL in Syria.

President Vladimir Putin said Russia was prepared to strike from the air, if approved by the UN, but ruled out troops on the ground.

At the UN both Putin and US President Obama bared their thoughts on Syria, highlighting major differences though some progress was made.

Speaking to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Putin said: “We do hope that we will be able to find common ground with our Arab partners, with Turkey, with the United States… with European countries, with a view to finding a common platform to fight terrorism.”

The key sticking point is the role of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Russia says he must be included, while the US and France are adamant he must go:
“The United States is prepared to work with any nation, including Russia and Iran, to resolve the conflict, but we must recognise that there cannot be, after so much bloodshed, so much carnage, a return to the pre-war status quo,” Obama said.

Many believe that if a solution to the Syrian conflict is to be found the West will have to work with Russia and oust Assad down the line.

Hmmm....there are already Russian combat troops on the ground in Syria.

Russian forces have begun participating in military operations in Syria in support of government troops, three Lebanese sources familiar with the political and military situation there said on Wednesday.

The sources, speaking to Reuters on condition they not be identified, gave the most forthright account yet from the region of what the United States fears is a deepening Russian military role in Syria's civil war, though one of the Lebanese sources said the number of Russians involved so far was small.

U.S. officials said Russia sent two tank landing ships and additional cargo aircraft to Syria in the past day or so and deployed a small number of naval infantry forces.

Putin is trying to keep his people from focusing on their dire economic situation and by going into Syria it also takes the focus off Ukraine and the damage he has done there. To me this guy is the third worst leader (dictator) in the world after the North Korean leader and Assad. It will take real boots on the ground to get rid of ISIS and no country seems willing to do that.

The Russians have had bases in Syria for years. Of course they have troops on the ground.

According to the Pentagon's "official" Base Structure Report, Fiscal 2010 Baseline the US, at that time, had 662 bases in 38 countries. Unofficial sources makes this look rather conservative. Currently the US has approximately 150K troops deployed globally.

By comparison, Russia has about 15 bases in 10 countries, including Syria, with approximately 50k troops deployed globally.

So, of the two countries, US or Russia, which has the most developed 'expansionist' foreign policy? You can't make this stuff up. This is why I don't listen to CNN or Fox News sound bites of the POTUS or any other US officials. The 'sheep' basking in the shade of Normalcy-Bias will consume whatever pablum that is pushed under their noses. It's better to do you're own research.

This is all a game: a deadly serious game, but a game none the less. There are no choir-boys.

Oh stop. You're being foolish. Honestly, don't the RT (aka Voice of Vlad) reruns get a little old? Over a quarter of the troops giving you all this apoplexy are in Afghanistan. We're fighting a war there, in case you haven't heard. And it's winding down. I don't think you could really say the U.S. is planning to make the 51st state out of it though. Sheesh. Almost all the rest in the UK, Germany, Italy, Kuwait, Japan, and S. Korea. It's not like we're trying to annex or "colonize" any of those places or trying to run any of those governments FPS. Bilateral basing agreements provide for their presence in almost every case; actually most likely every case. And taking Iraq & Afghanistan together, troop levels now are down to about a third of what they were at their peek (2008-2009, according to the Congressional Research Service). So get real. You're really trying to compare that to Putin's expansionism?

'Just the usual lame rationalization attempt to deflect criticism of Putin's open-secret plans to re-Sovietize eastern Europe.

I should have said troops engaged in combat with the Syrian troops. In battle, not just sitting on a base. Huge difference.

Of the two who has been INVITED to have bases in their country?

Hint: Putin doesn't ask.

Ukraine has asked for the US help with their war against the rebels. The US, so far, has decided not to do so. Maybe Russia should do the same with Syria? Stay out and let them sort this out themselves. Same with the US.

Just because you are asked to come in with military help doesn't mean it's in the best interest of the host country????

You are seriously misinformed. These are invited.
