BANGKOK: -- The Government will next month start paying compensation to those affected by political demonstrations that took place in 2013 and 2014, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said yesterday.

That was a period of time that saw the rise of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), which opposed the Yingluck Shinawatra government and staged a series of demonstrations, and the opposing red shirts, who staged their own protests before the military eventually staged a coup.

The Cabinet has already approved a budget of Bt120 million, he said, and those affected by the protests can claim compensation by submitting medical documents and proof to the officials. They can request compensation at the Social Development and Human Security Ministry, he said.

A subcommittee would be set up to proceed with the payments. The process would start today, Wissanu said, and the process should be done by the end of this year.

However, if those wishing to make a claim do not do so before December, they might not receive the money before the end of the year as the process takes time. But the compensation will not cover demonstrations that occurred at other times as those incidents and their impact are still pending clarification, Wissanu said.

In principle, families who lost one member due to the protests would be compensated to the tune of Bt400,000.

The payments would be made with no discrimination against any particular group, he said. And most importantly, it would have to be in accordance with the law.

Yes but by handsomely rewarding the red shirts for the 2010 problems they set a precedent. Large sums of money were flowing then to them. So now the other side wants compensation too.

In this county everyone wants a free ride farmers, protesters and the normal people are paying the bill because money can only be spend once and now its not going to education, better infrastructure and other good causes, but into the pockets of those demanding compensation.

It's this sense of entitlement...and immunity....that's a big problem here. Commit a crime? No problem if you have the right connections or a bit of money. The rule of law needs to be consistently applied to all....a dream!!!!!!!! LOL

And should PTP repay all the compensation that was paid out to the "victims" of the redshirt protests?

Real governments don't compensate protesters. Payment of compensation only occurs once a proper claim for damages is made, and the government's legal analysis demonstrates that the claim is valid (based on a likelihood of fault on the part of the government) and should be paid. If a claim is not paid, the protesters can present their claim in court.

In March 2015, the NACC prepared complaints about compensation payments made to families of protesters who died during political unrest between 2005 and May 2010. Yingluck’s critics accused her of having a conflict of interest in approving the payment, as many of the recipients were red shirts who supported her government.

How is the Junta compensation to 2013-2014 protest vtictims any different? Compensation will benefit alrgely PDRC who supported an overthrow of the government. It's not fundamentally different. Either the NACC should also bring complaints against Prayut as a conflict of interest or drop its complaints against Yingluck. "Equality of Justice" must be treated as more than just a fancy slogan.

Thank you for your description of 'Democracy - red-shirt style'.

Do you think the same for the protests in 2010 ?. Going by the enormous hypocrisy of your type, why do I think not ?.

When I was young a friend called me to ask if I wanted to go with him to a very seedy part of town to "watch the fights" which were a nightly affair. Being stupid I agreed, we were accosted for no reason other than our presence. My friend ended up with a broken nose and other injuries that resulted in a 3 day hospital stay. I was more fortunate, managed to get my back against a wall until a passing patrol car scared them away. The point being, if you want to be at the heart of the action, don't expect anyone else to pay for it.
