Ministry of Culture plans to promote Thai films

BANGKOK, 5 October 2015 (NNT) - The Ministry of Culture plans to promote Thai films in order to propagate Thai culture to the world.

Culture Minister Vira Rojpojchanarat disclosed that Thai film industry had brought a revenue of about 57 billion baht and ranked first in the ASEAN region and fifth in Asia and that a total of 472 films had been shot in Thailand, incurring over two billion baht in production costs since the last several years.

For that matter, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports will map out plans to promote film industry which may be designed to propagate Thai culture to world viewers as well as to support international cooperation efforts, Vira said.

Over 20 per cent of all Thai films is expected to be distributed worldwide in five years and to generate more than 150 billion baht in earnings.

In particular, he said, more Thai films may be distributed to China which is currently the world’s second largest film viewing market after the United States. The Chinese are known to be very fond of Thai drama series.

I sincerely hope that if the Thais make any attempt to promote their movies out of Thailand, that they make sure the subtitles are 100% properly translated by a fluent native speaker. Not using Google translate or some such gimmick.

Id like to see a Thai film on the history of their involvement in WW2 and the military standing up to defend against the Japanese.

I know it would only be a short film.

Unless Tony Jas is in them hell no, they are just like longer version of la korn or thos annoying comedies with the stupid sound effects.

And even old Jaa Peenom hasn't made a decent film in nearly a decade.

The MiniCult is one the case.

Get more patriotic films into production.

"The Long March to Thai Democracy", 83 years in the making, though they're still working on an ending.

Thailand has produced some excellent movies in the past, including Suriothai and Ong Bak but nothing much appears to have emerged in recent years apart from formulaic lovey-doveys or junk horror or the occasional historical blockbuster. Hardly anything turns up at the international form festivals these days. It is almost as if the film industry has gone missing. The role model might be Korea's support and promotion of its movie industry. One bright hope for sure is the TV drama series which might compete or at least supplement what Korea has to offer. That Thai film industry support is on the government radar is a positive step.
