Hundreds of Fake ID Cards Issued for Migrant Workers

A foreign worker displays his registration bracelet in northern metro Bangkok on 22 April.

PATHUM THANI — Five officials are suspected of issuing hundreds of fraudulent ID cards for migrant workers in Pathum Thani province, a high ranking official announced.

An investigation was launched recently after officials discovered duplicate entries in their migrant worker database for the same people – only with different faces, according to Chalermpol Mangkang, permanent provincial secretary. So far they’ve determined that at least 300 of fake ID cards were issued to migrant workers.

“We expect to find many more,” Chalermpol said.

He added that four officials are now being investigated, while a specialist at the Lat Lum Kaew district office has been transferred to an inactive post. Chalermpol did not name any of the five officials or elaborate on how they might have been involved with the alleged fraud.

The ID cards, known formally as document TR 38/1, are issued by Thai authorities for migrant workers from neighboring countries such as Myanmar and Cambodia, permitting them to stay and work in the kingdom for a limited time.

The fraud appeared to come to light when Channel 3 aired a report about the issue Friday. In its report, Channel 3 said some Burmese workers had complained to its reporters that their names and other private information have been duplicated on the ID cards of other migrant workers.

The land of fakes where even the fakes may be fakes.

Tommolow we close all borders with Myanmar.......let them come by air..tongue.png

Oh and we need a single database where we can track all people in Thailand, even if authority's used another persons name to make official papers.

think I will apply for inactive ones seems to be plenty clap2.gifcheesy.gif

Nice to see security has been stepped up in the face of the bombing, wouldn't want a bunch of unregistered foreigners running about.

Nice wrist band to easily identify non Thai's. How about using a nice star next time, maybe a yellow one with 5 points?

Does any one get sacked brought to justice in this corrupt country.

I think the MO is to "transfer" them.... maybe that's so they can spread their ideas far and wide?

Come to CM and you will find hundreds of fake ID and WP, Imm. bribes etc. etc. ....

All I can say is bravo to the people who are trying to clean up the mess.

They are the people who bring good face to the Kingdom of Thailand.

Take notice that it wasn't the Thai authorities who made the discovery without Burmese workers making the complaint about personal information being duplicated on the ID cards of other migrant workers. I'd thought a simple software program would have been installed to catch such obvious frauds - at least raise an error flag.

Rather than focusing on a single gateway for Thai internet, the government should give priority to fail-safe its internal software to detect and prevent abuse.

The computer would melt if it was set to detect "internal abuse" in Thailand

Bravo for another face-losing maneuver by the people being trusted....

BOO!

The gov't should issue fake ids as well as official ones. I can see it now:

"We have seen a great demand for fake id documents, and we think we can do well in meeting the demand" says Pol. Col. Somchai.

Plans to implement this will be announced soon, and will be as nonsensical as the idea itself.

...punish the victims...and 'investigate' the officials....I get it....

I can see more closed borders and new visa-rules for farang coming.

Calling that piece-of-crap system a "database" is a big stretch.

A database, designed with rudimentary controls, would exclude duplicates.

Calling the ICT Minister...neus.gif
