Question about Driver's License updating at Phuket Office

This is all because of threads now on Visa forum saying proof of residence is now needed to extend a TV

I was only thinking I could use the DL as proof of residence, but the number is wrong , so was seeking info on how to get that changed...how much hassle.

Would they even notice the number ? Who knows? Toss the dice.

Thank you very much for your responses today.

I think you are getting mixed up with 'residency registration' (land lord registers your passport details) and 'proof of residence' (issued on request by passport holder at Immigration office).

Sure you need a Certificate of Residence for a DL, but not for a one month extension on a tourist visa/60 day entry stamp.

I'll check with one of the Visa Mods.

Great news OK thanks, now as for docs needed? Copies? First born? I'm on a tourist visa is that going to be a pain? I might need to ask this in the visa, or some other section

You'll need original old and new passport, copies of passport pages (2 sets if applying for m/bike and car).

I don't think you will need a certificate of residence from Immigration if no address change.

But I do think there will be an issue changing even just passport number on a 5 year DL with only a toursit visa which only gets a 1 year DL.

Anytime you change, lose or expires you need residence certificate.

Its just part of the bueracracy.

And youre correct about tourist visa. No 5 year licence, only temporary.

Maybe if all the details like these were in the original post we might not have to frustrate the vague member.

Ok, I can understand the certificate requirement and officialdom BS.

But I urge the OP not to bother with the DL passport number change. DL of no interest to Immigration for any sort of extension.

I was also thinking the same. There was another discussion on TV regarding the mandatory or not to carry your passport with you all the time with you or not. Most of the people mentionned that only DL in enough in case of ID check because it has passport number on it. Anyway it is a different discussion. However reading that discussion, I realize that my passport number does not match with my current passport (as I am travelling alot, my passport run out of pages...). But i was also thinking that it doesn't really matter as long as i have a valid passport with a valid visa.

Few weeks ago, as I need to transfer a large amount of cash from bank account on a Sunday and didn't want to do it online, but my bank account branch (Phuket town) is closed on the week end, i went instead to Central Festival branch (Bangkok Bank) which is open 7/7.

I did my transaction without any problem but I asked them as I am mostly busy in the week days, if I could open an account in their branch that was more convenient for me as they are open on Sunday.

Of course, they started to ask me if I have a work permit. I told them NO because I am not working in Thailand but I have a non O 1 year multi entry as my son is Thai. Then after concerting, they asked me if I have a Thai DL. I showed then my valid 5 years DL. They then said Ok, would you like to proceed now for the account opening? Yes please proceed...

When they started the process, they saw that my passport number in my DL was not matching and then told me Sorry sir, you need to update your DL and come back to us...

Not a big deal for me as I already have others bank accounts but I realized then the fact.

I will change passport again next month and my DL is still valid until January 2017. If it is just matter of providing copies of passports, certificate of residence, then that's fine, I will get my DL updated. Otherwise, I will wait 1 year and 2 months to renew my DL

What Phuket immigration will want is this form filled out and singed by your land lord.

A drivers license will not be enough.

Thank you very much and also for posting it in the Visa section on that thread. However I get back to square one My landlord is missing, does not answer queries and never ever did this form.

Another mod in the visa section was saying on a thread there a renter can fill out a TM 30 ( is that this form you posted? ) as " housemaster" But then am I'm open to being fined for never doing it before ...?

That's why I thought to use my DL as verification, but then it has a different number . Arghhhhhhhh It just never stops, round and round ..

Need this but need that first but need this to get that ....Whoops that was needed yesterday after this was got, you'll need to get that after this Arghhhh.

TM30 and the form posted by ubonjoe serve the same purpose. Just that the Phuket Residence form is specific to Phuket Immigration. Both can be used and signed by the house master.

I guess you still have not yet tried for your 30 day extension at Patong Immigration. Just go and try, if they knock you back then as previously suggested check into a cheap guesthouse and have them register you on the database. Problem solved. Yu are the one making it complicated and going round in circles.

Address registration is not (yet) required for a 30 day extension unless Patong Immigration is creating their own rules.

So I can be the " housemaster" ? But my worry is I will be held responsible for not registering prior to this.

Please understand, if I can be as prepared as possible, then I save myself a lot of hassle- easier to be asking on a forum, than being injured or killed by traffic because I had to make 2 trips - didn't have the right form, copied X amount. Also if I go on once, and give them a heads up I'm not registered prior.... then more hassles.

Better to be prepared as completely as possible and far easier to ask on a forum than travel on the world's most dangerous roads. I'm coming from north Thalang, it's hours of traveling in really bad traffic.

( Should have an office at the airport for this. )

So thank you again, very much for the replies.

^ Thanks for that response Merijn, but can I ask, please how do you know this about Patong? Have you or someone you know extended a TV very recently? The opinion on the visa forum is address verification is now being asked for at all offices.

If you declare yourself 'housemaster' then you will have to provide supporting documents. As a farang that will be challenging. You would usually need to show your name in the so called yellow tabian baan, maybe a registered lease (endorsed by the land office) might suffice. A casual unregistered rental contract would not suffice.

I'm beginning to think there is much much more to you enquiry than meets the eye. Why all this drama for such a minor matter as a 30 day extension.

There is a new requirement, or rather as you said a newly enforced requirement regarding being registered and getting extensions on Tourist visa.

There's three threads on it right now in the visa section.

I started this thread here because I thought I could use A DL as proof of residence, but it needed the new PP #

I believe you have far more permanent visa situation so you may not be aware these new requirements are complicating the process, plus my own situation the details of which I have stated repeatedly.

I also believe you live relatively close to both offices. I do not. It's a long journey both ways, I'd rather not make it more than once.

Also it is being stated by a mod in a visa thread I can claim myself as housemaster if I have the lease, registration copy and ID of the owner. The lease is the problem.

I'm also on a very tight budget, so spending money on a room I do not need is an option I would rather not take.

Thank you for you help.

My first hand information is only from Phuket Immigration office.

In Phuket the address registration is not (yet) required for a 30 Day VOA or TR extension.

But Patong immigration has sometimes introduced their own rules and existing rules can be changed on a dime.

I was going to ask this question myself as I have a new passport and fairly recently renewed DL.

My circumstances are different to the OP as I am here on an extension of stay and all stamps have been transferred.

As I sometimes use the DL for ID (TrueMove recently accepted it to change promotions) I would prefer to have matching passport numbers.

From what I have gleaned, reading through this thread, I just need to turn up at a quiet time armed with 2 passports and some copies. I guess it'll cost 150 baht or so. There's no urgency. I'll give it a go sometime and if I need any other documents I'll just leave it as it is. And I'll post on here if I remember.

Might be you also need the Certificate of Residence issued by Immigration office. Please report back, thank you.

My 5 year DL has an old passport number and I'm wondering what kind of hassle it will be to update it in Phuket.

Anyone done this? What docs were needed?

Thanks for any responses.

I just did it today as I got new passport yesterday. Was quite easy. They asked for residence certificate which i got easily at the immigration as I have registered my address before.

They asked me 1 copy of new passport main page, 1 copy of the visa (non O 1 year for me). 1 set per licence (car + moto)That's it. No test, no video. Take a number, wait. Paid 110 + 220b for both licence. That was in Phuket town driving licence office.
