37,000 people at Surin in deep trouble from Typhoon Xangsane

Mr. Aum-nuai Tong-Boh <อำนวย ทองบ่อ > , Acting director of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation office at Surin, revealed about Typhoon Xangsane passed through Thailand in the last 4 days and that many areas have been damaged because of the heavy rainfall. Residents from the disaster have been affected by the flood situation as well.

Mr. Aum-nuai said that 4 major districts were seriously affected by the typhoon. They are Bua-ched <บัวเชด> district , Sa-nom <สนม> , Sang-Kha <สังขะ> and Jom-Phra <จอมพระ> and 37,000 residents needed some sort of assistance.

However, Mr. Somphong A-nu-yut-tha-pong <สมพงษ์ อนุยุทธพงศ์>, Surin governor, said government officials flew to Surin via helicopter to examine the area as well.

Surin affected by Xangsane Depression

Tropical depression Xangsane has hit Surin Province since the beginning of this month. 400 rai of agricultural areas have been ruined and about 40,000 villagers had suffered from the depression.

Mr. Amnuoy Thongbo (อำนวย ทองบ่อ), the acting Director of the Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in Surin, said that heavy rain in many areas would be expected due to the influences of Xangsane, as the depression is moving across Thailand since the past four days. He said it is also expected that a number of villagers would be in danger from the depression.

The initial assessment on the inundation suggests that four districts have been damaged. 15 roads have been obstructed in Bua Ched District, causing over 37,000 people in 6 tambons to commute inconveniently. The depression has destroyed 459 rais of paddy fields and 14 fish ponds, and it has troubled 310 local residents in three tambons in Sanom District. Moreover, the municipal areas in the districts of Sang Ka and Jom Phra have also experienced flood problems, and the water level in Sang Ka District is above 200 centimeters. Moving to Jom Phra District, floodwater has seeped into over 200 local people’s houses, and roads linking to villages have been disconnected. The impediment has left la gap larger than 100 meters in width, causing difficulties to 75 local households.

Today at 11 AM, Surin Governor Somphong Anuyuthphong along with the chiefs of relevant government departments has monitored the flood hit areas by helicopter.

Floods bring foot-and-mouth disease

Surin Provincial Livestock warns farmers to be cautious of foot-and-mouth disease in submerged areas.

Surin Provincial Livestock Prasert Sanpechudaya (ประสริฐ สรรเพชุดาญาณ) said that Typhoon Xangsane has submerged livestock farms, causing foot-and-mouth and swollen-neck disease. The local livestock farmers are suggested to have their cows and buffaloes vaccinated to prevent them from affection and take a good care of their animals during frequent rain. These measures would control and stop the disease from spreading.

The farmers are also suggested to stock up animal feed, following the flood consequences. If farmers are experiencing animal feed shortage, they should alert the provincial livestock officers immediately for assistance.

Buriram Governor assigns relevant units to quickly restore roads damaged by Typhoon Xangsane

Buriram Governor Yai Rojsuwanichakorn (ใหญ่ โรจน์สุวณิชกร) has assigned relevant units to quickly repair roads damaged by the influences of Typhoon Xangsane.

Mr. Yai inspected the roads being repaired in Lampraimas (ลำปลายมาศ) District. The roads have been inundated and obstructed. He has ordered Buriram Department of Rural Road to construct water barriers and help renovate the damaged roads, which is expected to finish today. As for the long-term measures, the province will construct water gates to reduce speed of the surging water, and bridges will also be built to replace the roads that intersect canals.

The Buriram Governor said that his deputies will cooperate with relevant units, including the department of rural roads. Local administration centers have been assigned to create master plans for solving problems related to provincial transportation and to restore damaged roads.

Respectfully, speaking first hand from two days driving around Buriram, Huarat, Nam Om and assorted other small places that I don't know the name of, that is a load of buffalo manure!

The road from Buriram to HuaRat is full of DEEP potholes, axelbusters. Today, some kind soul put tree branches across some of the worst. It is an obsticle course that scraped the bottom of my Toyota vios on several occasions regardless of where I tried to cut thru.

Past HuaRat, on the road to Satuk (don't know the name of the road) there is a turnoff onto a dirt road to Nam Om and several other villages. This is the only way in from HuaRat, one other deeply pitted road to Krasang. This road is WASHED OUT! I went thru 3 or 4 creeks now crossing the road, and again scraped the bottom of the car. I was likely the first car to try to get thru despite warnings that the road was out, but my sister in law just had a baby and we brought in supplies. High body pickup trucks and kwai are really the only ones safely getting thru (motorbike drivers get a bath).

There is NO work being done to repair these roads, none. This is first hand, and talking to reesidents.
