Valencia appoints Gary Neville as coach until end of season

MADRID (AP) — Valencia says it has appointed Gary Neville as coach for the rest of this season after Nuno Espirito Santo left by mutual agreement.

A club statement says Neville will "officially take charge of the first team" on Sunday ahead of its Champions League match against Lyon.

The club statement on Wednesday says Valencia is "delighted" to have secured Neville on short notice. Former Manchester United and England defender Phil Neville, Gary's brother, joined Valencia as an assistant coach in July.

England's Football Association says Gary Neville will also continue working alongside national coach Roy Hodgson as its squad prepares for Euro 2016 in France.

Neville says he's "absolutely thrilled" about his Valencia appointment.

Valencia is owned by Peter Lim, who holds a stake in English non-league team Salford City alongside Neville and other former Manchester United players.

The owner of Valencia also owns 50% of Salford City! Interesting appointment regardless but i do find it strange that he's continuing his role in the England set up.

yes it is shockingly jobs for the boys isn't it? one of spain's biggest and most historic clubs appoints a lad off the telly who has never been a manager but who is peter lim's business partner and whose brother already works at the club. if i were a valencia fan i'd be pretty pissed off about this i think.

To be fair, I do wish him all the best. He has been a breath of fresh air amongst pundits and it will be interesting to see how he gets on putting his theories into practice! 1st decision already a good one....chose to take over on Sunday, Valencia play Barca on Saturday. His first job will probably be to sack his brother after MSN tear them a new onebiggrin.png

At first I thought this was a thread on Valencia getting Gary Nev to coach him how to use his left foot.

hope it works out for him there is a lack of English managers at the top level, maybe a stepping stone to the England job or at United.

I think there's a lack of honesty in this thread, and a bit of jealousy.

After he finished playing, throughout which he never received the credit he deserved, everyone started to like him because he's a good lad. Even 'plastic scouser' Colin Murray has admitted as much.

Come one lads, I agree, if Lin wasn't around this probably wouldn't have happened, but Gary is a sound, profound and educated football man, and I bet my left <deleted> he makes a better dig of this than other 'star' names that have flattered to (Keano) deceive.

"Like me Murphy's, he's not Bitter"

If Gary was a scouser, you reds would be all over this, claiming the next second coming, again.

'Giz a break r kid eh"
