PHUKET: -- A joint task force arrested 40 gamblers during a raid on an underground Phuket casino in Chalong yesterday.

“We received a tip-off from neighbors that gambling activities were being hosted in a house on Baan Kok Tanot Soi 3 on a daily basis, with no apparent fear of the law,” said Pakpoom Intharasuwan, Phuket's Provincial chief administrative officer.

More than 100 people were found at the facility. However, arresting officers only managed to apprehend 40 offenders, which included a number of government officers.

I have been looking for pictures showing the demolition of the casino. "Task force takes down illegal Phuket casino"

Rubbish reporting! Main report says the casino is "underground", but picture shows property above ground!

Throughout Isaan, in many many villages groups of people play cards every day. In my village several houses are in use, with the householders earning up to 1000bt/day for the use of their property.

Government officers. Thousands on salary bunking off all day every day. There's 300 at my workplace. Every day the lights are on, the air con is on and there's nobody there.

Yes sir......and that is what they are supposed to do....that is until they learn just how much money the place is making and then:

They turn all "Blind Eye Bank Account" and the place keeps on operating.

Cheers

My wife and her friends used to play cards in our house in Phanat Nikhom. Nobody was making any money from it, it was half a dozen housewives playing for small stakes. My wife was pretty good, she used to just about break even on average. Maybe won a little which she then lost on the "underground" lottery. Used to get raided by the cops maybe once a month. At first the fines were ฿1,000, they later they climbed up to ฿5,000, so they finally stopped. It was harmless but an easy way for the cops to make arrests. I suspect most of the gambling in Thailand is like that, but there are professionals running games. Usually protected by the local police.

Whenever I read these stories I always imagine that someone lost quite a bit of money, went outside, put his uniform on and came back with friends to either shut the place down or reclaim his money.
