Don't understand how to add subs to movie

Featured Replies

Just downloaded a Norwegian movie called The Wave. When I open it it shows subs as English. srt, but when I add the subs to my flash drive, along with the movie, they don't show up when I play it. What am I doing wrong?

Try using VLC (free) and be sure the subtitle file (.srt) is in the same folder as the movie, and you have the subtitles turned on in VLC.

What I understand is that you have to rename the subtitle file with exactly the same name as your video file, so you have two files such as; samplevideo.avi and samplevideo.srt.

I think that was my mistake, I didn't rename the subs with the whole movie name. Cheers.

Another alternative is to mux them (video and subs) into a single file. I use mkvmerge found as part of the MKVToolNix toolkit.

- Add your video, then add your subs. Mark the subs as forced if you want them to show no matter what, then mux. The result will be an mkv file.

Another option is to download it with the subs already encoded (soft or hard).

With KMPlayer , you just drag any sub file to the player and it works , they can have a completely different name and in another folder or even another drive.

If you intend watching the film on a TV, then adding subtitles is a very complicated process, can be done using virualbub mod.

If you intend to watch on a computer monitor just add the subtitle file in the film folder and open with VLC.

Not complicated at all. I downloaded mkvmerge and it works fine as long as you already have the subtitles, and as others have explained you just make sure you give the subs the same name as the movie.

I downloaded an old japanese film in .mkv format and opened it with the windows software and there was a picture with sound but no subtitles...then I opened it with VLC and the subtitles magically appeared without any other adjustment...

is there a 'switch' within the bitorrent program that allows the subtitles to appear with VLC and not with other video software?

You'll probably find the subtitle has been incorporated into the mkv file vlc automatically shows it whilst other programs have to be told or are incapable of displaying the subtitle.

Bitorrent settings are unlikely to affect this unless the subtitles are separate .srt , .ssa, vobsub etc files and they either haven't been downloaded or they are named wrongly or in another folder.
