LONDON: -- Air India has suspended a pilot and co-pilot after a technician was sucked into an aircraft engine in Mumbai.

It would be interesting to see the details here as the say the aircraft was on push back. All ground crew know to avoid like the plague the intake area and a big safety area in front/behind. Suspending the pilots is hopefully just protocol and by God they will need some time off to get over it anyway.not sure how it may be there fault though.

Another report says there was maintenance in progress and the pilot misunderstood a radio call, which he thought was a request to start the engine.

Whatever happened something needs fixing to ensure such mistakes don't occur.

Somehow I can't imagine Indian airports are world class in terms of safety matters.

The guy sustained only minor injuries.

He was rather a lucky guy not to have been mince-meated

Lottery numbers??

How could this be considered a minor injury "The body of the victim, identified as Ravi Subramanian, was so badly mutilated that it could not be sent for post mortem examination, PTI added."

The standard procedure on departure is for the aircraft to be 'pushed back' from the gate by a tug and rotated 90 degrees after which the captain is cleared to start engines, and the tug unhitched. Seems that the captain started the engines before or during push-back due to miscommunication and poor old Gupta with his ear defenders on and not expecting engines to be running walked in front of an intake and was sucked into the fan. Cash strapped Air India will face two stiff bills; one compensation for the deceased and another for engine repair. These are by-pass fan engines and the fan can take a lot of punishment but not an object the mass of a human. Not a pretty sight.

Decades ago I personally witnessed a skinny Arab air force man sucked into a training jet intake. A person of normal build might have been pulled against the intake lip and badly bruised but this 'Jindi' was like a pipe-cleaner and was saved only by his oversize boots wedging against the intake when he was sucked in head first. The engine was shut-down immediately and when me and another guy pulled him out his face and head was the colour of an aubergine, deep purple. He survived because the intake was long enough to prevent his head from going into the engine compressor.
