Suvarnabhumi introduces automatic check-in machines

BANGKOK: -- The Suvarnabhumi airport on Monday launched a campaign for air passengers to use its automatic check-in kiosks in a bid to reduce congestion during the New Year Festival.

Sirote Duangratana, director of Suvarnabhumi airport of the Airports of Thailand Plc, said the campaign is intended for passengers to turn to use the airport’s “x-press check-in kiosks” to reduce the check-in time.

With the machine, each passenger requires only two to five minutes to complete the check-in and get a boarding pass, he said.

Mr Sirote said the airport has installed 16 automatic check-in machines at the departure lounge on the fourth floor.

The machines are being used by 14 airlines including Thai Airways International, Bangkok Airways, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa and British Airways.

During the trial period, the machines will be in use until Feb 29, 2016.

The “x-press check-in kiosks” will be manned around the clock by the airport’s staff to advise passengers how to use them.

Suvarnabhumi airport officials discover “x-press check-in kiosks”

Another first for Thailand.

A leap into the 21st century, good show Thailand.

If you still have to queue up to check in your bag, I don't see much use for them.

I flew to Cambodia last week and used these machines. The check-in line for Bangkok Airways was very long and I noticed a few people using the automated system. Scan your passport, print your boarding pass then drop your bag at a dedicated counter (with no line). Easy.

...manufactured by some Minister's son/brother/wife's factory, the machines will be able to be admired by all floating in the nearby canals sometime next year.....

Yes it does sound a bit like they are trying to make it a story about how progressive Thailand is.........

Wow Suvarnabhumi has a computer system....

I thought you could check in online with most airlines, plenty of Internet Cafes if you don't have access to the Internet or Printer.

Yes, you can check in online. This is just another option if you don't want to join the queue.

But if you are flying internationally you cannot use them….

Not discovered, not invented just introduced. I'm sure they used to have these a few years ago. It's a step in the right direction to reduce the queues.

Yes, I do that sometimes with TG, mostly so that I can select a good seat on domestic flights. Using the iOS app, I check in, then it asked me if I would like to save it to Wallet. I tap yes, and it never saves. So I email it to myself. If I have a bag to check, they print a boarding pass. If I go straight to the gate and show them my electronic boarding pass, the whole queue waits while they create a paper boarding pass. Very nice implementation TG has.

Also, TG tried kiosks for checkin several years ago, and I saw them in both BKK and CNX for domestic flights. Looked to me like most locals could not work out how to use them, and at any time, half were down. And then the kiosks went away.

This one just looks like another boondoggle to me.

And they still need to employ people to explain how to use the systems, and hope there's not an issue... then drag your bags(s) over to queue at another counter where someone else has to recheck the tags etc to make sure you haven't made an error. awful things...

and 'Express'? Two to FIVE minutes.... so a whopping 12 people or up to maybe 30 per hour per terminal... if they're lucky.

Bah, humbug. tongue.png
