I hear BMW plan to bring in the X1 around Feb, but it will be a CBU to keep the grey imports out. Expect the CKD from July onwards.

No idea on pricing but expect something in the 2.2m+ region for the CKD as the new X1 is pricier than the previous generation.

Not sure what you're talking about. If it's assembled on Thailand the tax rate is much lower than importing a fully built car. That's it. 2.2m is the likely starting price, as there are many models/features for them to include to create different price points. Shouldn't a 4WD model cost more than FWD only?

These are the rumors doing to rounds, yes. Don't expect too much of a price drop once they move to locally assembled though - expect a specification change instead.

Whatever you do, test drive the thing before you buy - my overseas colleagues unanimously hate the way it rides. Maybe they'll fix that for the CKD version though.

found a nice review

Yeah, I really like this guy's style - very thorough. But German Autobahns are a little better than a Thai standard road...

Here's some other reviews:

On the move, there’s much to love about the X1 driving experience, but it’s not immediately apparent — in fact, downright difficult to discern — because the ride quality of the standard-fit suspension tune is, frankly, third rate.

Firm is an understatement. And along the patchwork back-country roads BMW chose for the X1 launch drive program, every lump and ripple was felt in the car’s vertical movement. Some of the blame may lie in the stiff sidewalls of the runflat tyres, but when the nose of the 25i skips a good ten centimetres off the chosen line in even modestly sized mid-corner bumps, the blame can be squarely aimed at the suspension tuning.

The overall suspension settings too leave a little to be desired in terms of comfort, as it jitters over constant bumps while hard-edged irregularities send a thud through the cabin. Road noise is also ever present, even on relatively smooth surfaces. It's liveable in most circumstances, but certainly not the benchmark in its class.

thanks - need to test drive once available with and without adaptive suspension on our nice Thai roads and sois

You'll have to see what the options are that come with the car when it's released since WYSIWYG. It's possible none of them come with the adaptive suspension as it's usually a factory option.

lets hope - usually the thai models come pretty high spec wise compare to e.g. Germany

  • 3 weeks later...

Rep just raced to tell me the new X1 is launching this month. I told her to check out Line chat as I already knew a couple of months ago!

Anyway, I've ordered my Everest already so no chance of me jumping ship.

According to my dealer, it will be launched on the Bangkok Motor Show, which is in end of March. But they might take orders before that?

Didn't really get into it with her, I'm guessing that the dealers may start taking bookings now. But not sure there's any point as it's a CBU. Better to wait for the CKD coming July/August.

The only reason for offering it now before the factory is ready to make them in Rayong is to reduce the number of grey imports. Guess we'll see if that works out. I hope people who buy early don't get annoyed when they find out a ฿500k+ cheaper and identical car is coming a few months later.

Out of curiosity whats the price on the base Thai made X1, anyone know?

No official prices have been announced for the new X1, and I wouldn't expect we'll hear prices on the Thai made models until they actually launch - BMW still want to sell the imports for a few months first ;)

I bought a 1-series CBU, and I am happy its a CBU. The price is the same as the current CKD, but it has some option the local variant doesn't. Alcantara sports seats, compared to the cheap looking local leather.

Seems like the managed to get the prices down on the CBU's lately. The new 7 looks like its going to stay CBU. And the pricing is aggressive.

Unless it's done illegally, a brand new CBU vs CKD is never going to be the same price. When I see that happen I worry whether the correct taxes have been collected yet. Many a tale of people buying imported cars at too good to be true prices and later found out various taxes/duties are owed and then had the car seized.

Taxes and duties are calculated based on the list price of the car, not the price paid for the car before importation.

Illegally?? haha.. Well, all 1-series M-sport CBU was 1,990,000 Baht. The same as the current CKD. But of course lower profit margins to make it attractive. U really think that BMW Thailand sell illegal cars?

The 7 Series is over-priced by about 3 million baht, so I assume you mean 'aggressive' in a bad way?

I'm talking about the brand new 7-series (740Li, 3.0L 326hp), which is priced at 6,999,000, fully equipped. This is cheaper than the previous models, and a much better car. Hence the term 'aggressive'.
