I go to the ChiangMai markets frequently. This explains why I am always short of money.

Business is booming in Chiang Mai, 'eh? Should have stayed in Ho Chi Minh city. Well, boyz, enjoy you vacation in Thai Prison. I sure some of the Thai inmates want nothing better than a cute Vietnamese bunk buddie.

Last month I was in Vietnam at the Binh Tay market in Ho Chi Minh city and saw a team of pickpockets in action.

My wife and I were targeted after paying for a souvenir walking stick. They saw where my wife's money was kept and the spotter signalled to a girl that we were the targets. She moved to shadow us, and when we got to a very busy stall, stood behind us and opened her large handbag, waiting to receive whatever they picked from us into her bag. Im fairly sure my wife's purse was the target.

I spotted it almost straight away, so when they made their move at distraction, I just inconspicuously put my arm around my wife and moved her away from the stall. The girl with the open bag followed us down the alley, not realising I was on to her. I told my wife to glance in the direction of the girl and check out the open back and explained it was a pickpocket team.

She looked, but before she had time to reply, 2 police walked into view and the girl with the open bag made a quick run to the nearest exist. My (Thai) wife was shocked, and had never seen such a thing.

But the way these teams operate is well known and a quick search of youtube or numerous TV shows will show you how they operate. They are ever present and can adapt their tactics, so it pays to be on the lookout, especially at markets but many other busy places too. I chose my clothes based on defence against pick-pockets, but my wife choses handbag based on colour and that they look nice!!

Hey they thought with AEC we can now go to work in Chiang Mai, more money to be had. Someone needs to explain to them illegal work is not covered under AEC regulations.

is the girl going to work in the police chiefs karaoke bar?

you know, the places where they charge you 10,000 baht for two beers and then beat the sh*t out of you if you don't pay.

i always keep 10 fake diamonds in my left pocket and 3 live scorpions in my right..
