BKK Governor is confident that if the water level will not exceed the max of 2 meters, flood situation is under control

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin (อภิรักษ์ โกษะโยธิน) is confident that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) officials can manage the released water from the dams and avoid flood problems. However, the water level of the torrent must not exceed the maximum of two meters

Mr. Apirak said that the water has been released to Ayutthaya Province, and it is expected to reach Bangkok. The water level is now at 4,789 cubic meters per second. Officials have been urged to closely observe the water level in the flood-prone areas along the riverbanks of Chao Phraya. He stated that there is no high tide at this moment and the water level in Chao Phraya River stays at 1.92 meter. He added that if the officials are able to contain the water level not to surpass 2 meters from October 23rd to 25th, he believes that sandbags can handle this amount of deluge and it should not overflow to the areas.

However, he has assigned the officials to build more ridges and drain water out of various roads, to provide convenience to motorists and people. He said that the medical teams from the Public Health Ministry will be dispatched to deal with flood-related diseases.

The Bangkok Governor added that he will discuss the flood situations in every area of Bangkok at the meeting with the BMA executives tomorrow. He said that the meeting will also evaluate the situation to prepare for further handling measures. He reaffirmed that if rain would not fall again, he is confident that the BMA officials can deal with the current flood situation.

Living in Bangkok, I just want to say that Bangkok Governor Apirak has done a great job (despite his guarantee that we would not have floods a week before we had floods). He has made flood control a priority and has been very active in finding solutions, unlike a previous Bangkok Governor who did not want to get his feet wet, literally.

BKK Governor is confident that BMA officials can deal with situations during the high tide on Oct 23-25

Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin (อภิรักษ์ โกษะโยธิน) confirmed that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) can deal with the high tides on October 23rd to 25th, while allowing the excess water to enter inner Bangkok during the possible emergency situation.

He insisted that Chao Phraya (เจ้าพระยา) River will not overflow into inner Bangkok during the high tidal water, which is expected to cause the volume of water in Chao Phraya River to reach 2.20 meters. He, however, said that the water level will be 80 centimeters lower than the height of permanent dams and 50 centimeters lower than the height of sandbags. Besides, the Meteorological Department has issued a forecast that there will be no heavy rainfall during the time. However, he has warned people who stay outside the water walls to daily follow up news related to the matter in preparation for possible floods.

As for the plan to divert excess water to inner Bangkok, Mr. Apirak said that it will the last measure for coping with the flood crisis and it will be used during an emergency case only. He said that the BMA officials have already prepared for the rivers in the capital to store water flowing from the North.

Currently, the speed of the water flowing from the North is at 4,821 cubic meters per second, and the high tides will happen at 16:00 hours today
