We're up in CR with friends at the end of the month and would ordinarily stay at Dusit or Meridian but our friends are budget minded.

Can anyone recommend a decent/good place to stay under say 2k a night?

Thanks in advance.

There's a very wide selection in the 500 to 2000B range around the city center.

I'd let Google be your friend here and check out the reviews on the popular travel and accommodation sites.

I've heard good comments about the Wiang Inn, the Wang Come and both Diamond Parks but have no personal experience to offer.

Many thanks, of course I have looked at Agoda et al, was just wondering if somebody had a personal gem or preference tucked away.

Stayed at the Wiang Inn a few years back. No complaints and nice and central.

Price range looks OK for your budget - just.

I stayed there about twelve years ago and it was good then, I just wanted to see what else was around that folks could recommend.

De Hug, without question.

Thanks, that would have been a good choice but we've already booked the Vie Enros, we'll save that hug for another time. Thanks to everyone for the ideas.

I hope you enjoy your stay in Chiang Rai. Can you give a report of the hotel after your stay?

Just back from Chiang Rai, the hotel was OK, seven years old and still in decent shape. The rooms are a decent size although the colour schemes might not be to everyone's taste, based on which room you get (ours was bright yellow!). Check in time 2.30pm, reception was efficient enough, cable TV in the room with loads of channels but none in English, the room thermostat controls showed a heat option which when pressed and set refused to budge over 17 degrees, a bit nippy in the morning but plenty of hot water in the shower. Breakfast menu is complete, American, British, Healthy etc, all ala carte, the menu was better than the food, poor quality ingredients and preparation didn't suit my tastes but there's enough there to get something into the stomach to start the day.

For 1,500 a night as a place to sleep, it's OK, if I had one gripe it's that the place was soulless and characterless but the bed was comfortable. Personally I'd rather pay an extra 500 and take the Dusit in off season, as slightly dated as it is it offers a better experience all round, I think.
