US election: Tight race in final countdown to Iowa caucuses

DES MOINES: -- In the run-up to Monday’s Iowa caucuses, White House hopeful Hillary Clinton has a lead of just three percentage points according to an influential last-minute poll.

The Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics Iowa poll released on Saturday indicated a tight Democratic and Republican race.

Democrat Clinton was only just ahead of self-declared socialist Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, at 45 percent to 42 percent.

But the row over the former Secretary of State’s use of an unsecured home server for e-mails, some of which the State Department deems too ‘top secret’ to disclose, just won’t go away.

Clinton continues to defend herself against claims that she made highly sensitive government secrets vulnerable to attackers.

“I don’t know which ones they have plucked out to fail to disclose and we have called for all of them to be released. This doesn’t change anything about the fundamental facts. I never sent or received any e-mail marked classified. I take classified information very seriously,” she said.

For the Republicans, outspoken billionaire frontrunner Donald Trump leads by five points in the Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics Iowa poll.

Trump and his closest rival ,Texas Senator Ted Cruz, stand at 28 percent and 23 percent respectively. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida was overwhelmingly the third choice, at 15 percent.

Trump suggests that Cruz may not be legally qualified to be president.because he was born in Canada.

Cruz, born to a US citizen mother and Cuban father in Calgary, Alberta, has brushed aside the attacks about his eligibility as pure politics.

HRC the anointed heir of the Democrats, who should get the nomination...if she is not indicated. Who are the dems fooling? Even if criminal charges are not brought against this witch how could Americans vote for an airhead that left America's top secrets unsecured.

Dems are scrambling as Bernie just might end up being their nominee. Bernie an Independent allowed to run as a Democrat as he was thought of as no threat to HRC's coronation.

As for the Republicans as least they do have many choices to choose from, any of which is far better than Hillary or Bernie.

Hillary and Bernie both have a comfortable lead over any Republican candidate. The Republican candidate can expect no help from Independents and they've turned off all prayer of getting help from any of the necessary minorities including women. They're all wingnuts with little appeal outside the base.

Criminal charges against Hillary is pie in the Republican sky bullshit. They're grasping at straws with this because their candidates don't have a prayer. So we'll be hearing all about the criminal charges and that Hillary is a crook just as we've been hearing about it during the bullshit Benghazi experience. It ain't going to work.

I suggest the Republicans go back and take a look at why Romney lost because it's the same reason they're going to lose again. They've become less inclusive and far more crazy since Mitt.

You do have choices, bassman. You can take solace in that, I suppose. Unfortunately, they're all terrible choices.

Looking at the pictures no doubt which way the article leans to. this kind of media crap is why Trump is popular and will be the next president. Americans are tired of this.

Are you saying Americans are fed up with leaders who have actual government experience and know how it works?

Half of what Trump promises to do can not be done by a President and must be done by the legislative of judicial branches of the government.

Trump is an entertainer, not a leader.

He doesn't have a clue about government in the U.S.

P.S. I am not a Hillary supporter, but I do know a little about government.

Yes, in your humble opinion. IMHO, I hopeful of the masses voicing their displeasure by supporting a challenge to the status quo will by support the candidate who is proposing real steps to address the ills which have grown since the Reagan "trickle down". Trump is also giving voice to this frustration and anger but it is only appealing to emotions. " I will build a wall and Mexico will pay for it", " I will stop all Moslems coming to the U.S.", sounds great....now let's deal with the issue of immigration reform and terrorism, the wealth gap, balancing the citizen's needs versus spending so much blowing people up around the globe...

Agreed but that previous experience is working against candidates due to the current disfunction of government. We might well agree as to reasons for this disfunction but it is the elephant in the room. I am hopeful that the groundswell of frustration will continue to build behind Sanders.

Nice to see the birth issue is being resurrected. All we need now is for allegations that if elected Cruz will facilitate a Canadian invasion or that he'll receive instructions from Raoul Castro.

I'm surprised Hillary evenhas a lead and hope it widens by the final count. While Bernie has some fresh and innovative ideas to improve the economy and health, I doubt he could stand against a Republican majority congress as Obama has to get legislation through. I expect Hillary would be much more capable than Bernie dealing with the Republican congress as president. On foreign affairs, Bernie is no more informed than Carson or Trump. Hillary has the most experience.

Your last comment made my day I just could not quit laughing. Your obviously a dyed in the wool small r republican. Its obvious you have not watched these clowns debating. What a circus sideshow act. The upcoming caucuses will be a true game of pin the tail on the donkey blindfold and all Hee Haw. The real funny part of each debate was how they interviewed the "back room" people and how many did a 360 on their preference after each debate and their reasons for the switch were hilarious. Bunch of lemmings looking for a cliff as they now have a leader to follow.

Secondly, Trump is unelectable in the general election. He has negative favorability numbers among Independents. Without Independents and moderate Democrats and Republicans, winning a presidential election is impossible.

A worst case scenario I can see possibly coming to fruition is rational Republicans making a powerplay at the convention to get someone electable on the ticket and it sets off total chaos. Trump would bolt the party and run as a third party candidate and Secretary Clinton (or god forbid) Senator Sanders would get well over 350 electoral votes.

81% of the electorate is either a woman or a minority. The chances of Trump or any of the Republican candidates getting close to a majority of that electorate after this primary season are nill. Republicans lose on their abortion stance alone! Forget the way they've pooped all over minority voters.

This election won't be close and which Republican candidate (or democratic for that matter) they prop up there is irrelevant. Bernie is more popular than HRC among independents. I honestly don't care.

It really is good and full of FACTS that I had forgotten. It made me reconsider voting for Trump, even though I am not a fan. Kudos to whoever made that video.
