Hello...Im looking around for my first car in Thailand. Mainly Mazda BT-50 and Ford Ranger Wildtrak. I see many 3.2 for sale now...is this becouse of new and higher road tax on large engines?

Anyone know how much road tax to expect for a 2.2 and for a 3.2 pickup?

Road tax varies by # seats, GVM, age, capacity and vehicle type - it's not a static number. The difference between these two would be small though - probably less then 1,000 Baht/year

I seriously doubt road tax differences between 2.2L and 3.2L bothers anyone.

"road tax" ?

There has been no change in (annual) road tax.

There have been changes in excise tax (sales tax).

I am too lazy to work out the effects on those big 3.2l 4-door "pickups".

Guess they are affected seriously (like limousines).

So it will bcome harder to sell them and the dealers have to give in on margin/profit.

"Real" pickups (2-door, 2-1/2 door) are little affected.

If it is 2 door the road tax is about 1000 baht

Correct. Taxed on empty weight.

Road tax for new 4-door:

2.2 l : ~ 3700 Baht

3.2 l: ~ 7700 Baht

But as said: unchanged.

A good picture from another thread about the price hike by the excise tax.

Looks like even double-cab pickups are little affected with 30'000 Baht.

Tax for 2 door pickup is constant over lifetime.

Tax for 4 door pickup/limousine is constant for the first 5 years.

From the 6th year on it decreases by 10% annually until bottom out at 50% of the full rate for lifetime.

I think I pointed out the difference (post #5, #7).

And this remark in the OP made me think what it was referring to:

.is this becouse of new and higher road tax on large engines?

It's higher the higher the displacement (for 4 doors) but not new.

Also the OP is planning to buy a new vehicle where the raised excise tax is of relevance.

Surprised at the big difference between 2.2l and my Triton (4 door) 2.477cc which is 4,800 baht.

Tax is 4 Baht/ccm (from 1800 ccm onward).

Difference:

(2477 - 2200) * 4 = 1108

So all to the rules.

1 ccm to 600 ccm: 0.5 Baht/ccm ( 600 ccm = 300 Baht)

601 ccm to 1800 ccm: 1.5 Baht/ccm (1800 ccm = 2100 Baht)

>= 1801 ccm: 4 Baht/ccm

my 2.4 triton 4 door is 4,668 baht

i think the 1st january prices increases were something of a farce, my triton went down in January, from what i paid at the end of november
