I met this article on Consumer Reports ( http://www.consumerreports.org/used-car-buying/used-cars-to-avoid-buying/ )

It may be useful if you are thinking about purchasing a used car (2006-15 models).

What car models are not good to buy? what series? etc...

models of 2005 and go back or models of 2016 are fine to buy? means buy a 10 years old car or wait ti get this year model?

I don't really believe in such reports,

I bought and sold several times used Toyota around 2010 and later, all are clean used ones functional in all aspects,

most likely this report from some car makers to push the slowed down sales or something fishy around ,,

why would anyone want to buy a second hand US built car in Thailand ?

Feel sure even in Chiang Mai, they have Thai or Asian built cars For Sale, its not that far north or remote.

Any Toyotas basically.

I dont see Toyota on that list at all !

Obvious troll. You see more old toyotas on the roads of any country than any other make.

Rubbish. You have no idea what you are talking about. Very disrespectful as well.

I know pretty well what I'm talking about. Bought both cars and bikes second hand in TH. And you need to look very, very carefully to really find one, that is worth the effort. 95% are in very bad shape without or with wrong maintenance done. In the end we opted for 2 new cars. Why is stating obvious facts disrespectful or even racists?

Strangely a new Toyota drives like an old one, so why would anyone waste money on a new one?

Maybe one doesn't want to pay the ridiculous prices they ask for USED cars in Thailand! These people buy a car for 800,000B drive it for two years and want to sell it for 700,000B!!

Posted

I've figured the best ownership strategy in the long run is to by a Pick-Up new, keep it for 10 years, sell for 1/3 of the new price and repeat. Cost is about 4000B/month including maintenance. Second hand is a risk. Also, I quite like the look of Pro Auto, they come across well on this forum, but the OP is about cars sold in the USA, a very different range to Thailand. Thai newspapers and magazines must produce articles like this that are more relevant to Thailand.

Even Malaysians don't buy Proton. So why should it be in any list? Same as Thairung. They build fake Hummers now smile.png

K.Naboo - Yes, I have been aware that it is about car sold in USA. Please let me clarify my initial intention a little bit more.

I was interested in the models which are available in Thailand & in the list. I think it is worth "checking" whether it really has a problem. If it is, we should avoid buying them.

For example, Ford Fiesta or Chevloret Cruze. I tried to google them with Thai keyword ขวัญใจรถยก (Beloved Tow Truck Service)

And got the result as follows :

( The first link is http://pantip.com/topic/33028813 ).

(Some of my friends who owned Fiesta and a partner who has a used car business also shared experience about this model. They are quite consistent with the result above.)

I have not been aware of the report which is more relevant to Thailand. Anyway, thank you for your suggestion.

If I come across the comprehensive report or good article about used car in Thailand, I will share it in the future. smile.png

Haha.. That's true .. Malaysian doesn't support Proton is also because the price for Proton is consider expensive for a locally made car compared to other entry level Japanese cars

^ That works, especially for brands that keep their value well like Toyota and Isuzu. Even after 15 years it's still worth a third of the new price, and no major issues so far.

Thailand is really very good at making reliable trucks, that are easily and conveniently serviced anywhere.

Own two Toyotas

A 2013 corolla, never had a problem and a 2002 Echo,

I bought the Echo used 2005 I dont remember how muchbut no more than $6,000

.For those who dont know the Echo was the pre-runner the Yarris and is IMO a funny looking car but very roomy for it's size.

Anyway , back then I was working as a Union Carpenter, in the High-rise construction industry and needed a cheap car to commute to the City, easy to park.. Since then I have advanced in the Company and run the staging Yard and logistics. In the Office parking lot the Owner and activities park their Corvettes , Cadillacs and Ford Raptors. and here I am with my Echo.

It is always a jock, but it has also branded me as frugal.

In 11 years aside from changing the oil, tires and battery, I have never fixed anything, it now has 130,000 miles and fully expect it to go to 300,000 I am 59 years old now and plan to retire at 62, I am afraid I will die before the Echo dies.It stlll runs as good as the day it came out of the factory

Stock picture from the internet, I dont have a picture of mine Mine is also silver and identical to this one

Different car and bike different use.

If some import car or lux car 3-5 year old can find in good condition.

If some not expensive and local ... yes , this Thai Not care about car and bike. But its better situation than in China.

Not 300k yet only 130k which is low for a 14 year old car and all highway miles, it is one of the few 4 cyl engines that has a chain timing and not a belt timing. Dont know if will make it to 300k I dont have a crystal ball and even if it was to die tomorrow it still would have being a great car as it will have coat me about $400 per year. And that's the point

IMO Toyota makes great cars.

Reliability lists like this one based on a simple tally of the number of problem reported are of no value. It matters what the specific recurring problems are.

From an article today on Canada Journal summarizing a recently released J.D. Power dependability study (which may in fact be what the Consumer Reports list is based on):

"The problems most often reported by owners include connecting mobile devices via Bluetooth and voice recognition systems misinterpreting commands."

And this regarding the Fords that are bolded in the CR summary:

"The Blue Oval has suffered in recent years due to its problematic Sync infotainment system"

Without knowing what specific problems a vehicle line is susceptible to, ranking them by problem count is meaningless. Five reports of transmission failure does not make a vehicle twice as reliable as 10 reports of a voice command system (hate them all) playing Cat Scratch Fever when I clearly said "play Justin Bieber".

Its not correct.

Some model from Toyota its great and good.

130k miles it strange for chaine. you must look. because its near 80k must be changed? in almast car.

And youdo not changw shocks?

it be not realy sefty driver at this is car. car lost in handling .

Ps

In Past I had 124 merc with 3 l petrol engine. We( me and my friend) use so hard as killed. but never open engine 450k km more

after give as gift some driver work for as. so this is guy even I did not change the shock absorbers. oil changed often, and very cheap.

His use this is car as pick up, so hard. the car was in a terrible state. add oil every 500 km.

but car still run and its more 100k after engine die. his repaire engine, change some parts for second hand. and run more 60k antil car not die in tree

:)

But its nothing to say. in my opinion i never drive car as this is . it not saftly ;)
