Buriram to eradicate poverty by 2009

The Poverty Eradication Center in Buriram Province together with the government and private sectors brainstormed ideas to devise a plan to eliminate poverty in a sustainable manner by adhering to His Majesty the King’s Sufficiency Economy philosophy.

Yesterday (Oct 25), the Buriram Deputy Governor, Mr. Vichien Chavalit, attended this meeting where 30 people participated. The meeting took place at the Buriram Provincial Plant Research and Learning Center. The Poverty Eradication Center has a vision that poverty will be completely eliminated in Thailand within the next three years. Poor people and community members will be capable in managing the problems and develop themselves with the help of the local ways of life and the Sufficiency Economy concept. They will become immune to globalization and have a more important role in managing the local natural resources. They will also be able to reach the services of the government. The operational plan has been set to connect provincial communities together so they can work together in fighting poverty continuously.

Mr. Vichien said Buriram has a model scheme for the provincial communities in 27 tambons in 8 districts to be self-dependent. Relevant agencies will consider this scheme so it would become more concrete, and the plan to eradicate poverty in a sustainable manner would be developed consequently.
