Since suegha asked....then I got an album by Los Indios Tabajaras..I'll leave it up to Thaddeus to fill us in on the ethnomusicological details.

The first album I bought was Time Out , Take Five by Dave Brubeck.....I had to decide if I wanted to by a monoral or a stereo recording...the stereo cost more and I only had a Hi-Fi record player (not stereo) so I bought the monoral and probably saved a buck and a half.

Chownah

Now that is interesting..... Take Five is one of only two singles that have charted using a 5/4 time signature.... do you know what the other one was?

Money by Pink Floyd....without looking! Changes for the solo to 4/4, though.

Ooooooooooooops! Now I looked up the link and....bust!! That's a 7/4... :o

anyways..interesting with what screwed up rythms some bands cam up with....

(1992) "Metropolis Part 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper" by Dream Theater - contains 5/8, 12/16, 13/16, 5/16, 13/8, 7/4, 9/8, 18/16, 7/8, 9/16, 7/16, 3/16, 10/16

...in case someone bothered to know....

Isn't 12/16 time the same as 3/4 time only the notation is different...?

Chownah

Edit: Since I think what I suggested is obviously true (or is it?) then I guess that the real question is, is there some musical reason for using 12/16 instead of 3/4 aside from the notation.

yes, there certainly is. It has a different feel....imagine the drummer playing the high-hat (that is this two-horizontal-cymbles thingmy that the drummer has on his left) 16 times per bar instead of only 8 times at the same meter (i.e. quarters per minute). The music becomes more "upbeat" and seems to be faster although the speed remains the same.

I'm not following. Isn't 12/16 time mean that there are 12 beats to a bar and a 16th note gets one beat? If this is so then wouldn't the high hat (which would be represented with 16th notes) go 12 times per bar instead of the 16 which you suggest? And if this is correct then couldn't the exact same thing be scored in 3/4 time where there are three beats per measure and and a quarter note gets one beat so the high hat would still be represented by 1/16th notes...it would still take 12 of those pesky 16th notes to fill a bar. The meter would have to be adjusted accordingly.

I could be wrong....its been a long time since I played any music.

ooops...I was referring to a 16/16....sorry for that confusion.

yes, you are right....say it is a 4/4 beat (makes it easier to explain)...for a simple beat, the bass drum would make the 1 and the 3 and the snare the 2 and the 4. This is a 4/4.

Now comes the high-hat in addition to the above and plays 1+2+3+4+ this would be classically notated as an 8/8 beat as it has an eighth feel.

If the high-hat doubles its frequency and plays 16th, you would call it a 16/16...the bass and the snare still go at the same pace as at the beginning.

yes, there is some semantics to it... :o

After the Los Indios Tabajaras album I think I bought a Buffy St. Marie album.....Little Wheel Spin and Spin. The first concert I ever went to was a Buffy St. Marie concert. I don't remember the first word I said after the concert though.

Oh!!!! I forgot about my Smolther's Brothers albums...do they count...I had about three or four of them purchased sort of at the same time as the others.

So, after I got the Buffy St. Marie album I think the next one signaled a major turning point in my life....it was a Bob Dylan album...Another Side of Bob Dylan. This album signaled a turning point in his career too.....it had some stuff from his folk style and some stuff form his emerging electric style.

After I got this album I started to question alot of stuff.....including what smoking things other than tobacco was like. I've found answers to some of those questions but I'm still working on some of the others.

WE DID IT!!!! WE ARE VICTORIOUS!!! I KNEW IF WE STUCK TOGETHER WE COULD TOP THOSE LAST WORDERS AND WE DID.....THE FIRST WORD REIGNS VICTORIOUS!!!

We have accomplished our coup here. The First Word now has OVER 5% as many posts as The Last Word and we now claim the victory that is ours....good work to one and all.......There is only one word that can adequately describe The First Word topic and all those who have pulled so hard to put it on top...and that word is...."First"....and there is only one word adequate to describe The Last Word topic and those who would usurp our place in the sun...and that word is ...."Last".

Please... somebody tell me this is a bad dream ... it's the text version of stalking.
