There is something decidedly odd.

  1. Yamaha Spark, new @ 38,800 (drum brake). @ 42,xxx with disk brake and perhaps some other upgrade
  2. a 2015 model? @ 23,000
  3. an 11 years old model with 54,000 km? @ 13,500
  4. a very old Honda Dream? @9,800

Some people think buyers will be queuing for their used Honda Wave 110s @ 40,000.

A neighbor failed to rent his condo @ 18,000. Instead of adjusting the rent, he left it vacant for like 5 long years!

Surely, the dealers only buy at attractive prices. But today's visit at Chiang Mai's used bike market was not much different than looking at a car dealer's lot. coffee1.gif

Well, the Spark losing about 16,000 Baht in its first year. While it's just 9,500 Baht more depreciation for an additional 10 years. 1,000 Baht a year is unreal. Wouldn't you agree?

Why is it unreal ?

Well, today I bought a 10 months old SPark (tax & insurance paid till 7/2017) with less than 4,800 km for 22 k. Compare that to 13.5 k for a Spark which is 10 years older.

Seems a lot of people get their financed bikes reposessed...

The answer to this strange pricing system may be that 10 years ago there was very little choice in the bike ( and car ) market. Prices were high and choices were very limited , so you bought a Honda and keep it untill it died. The few people selling a second-hand bike asked a high price for it in order to recoup some of the money. Today thats not the case. Bikes are cheaper , in real terms , and choices are far better , with many bikes overtaking Honda on both quality and value , and many "new" makes such as Benelli , Stallion and Keeway coming to the market , offering great value alternative choices. With more dissposable income , people now decide they "want" another bike , rather than "need" another. So they sell their 1 or 2 year old model and purchase an upgrade. The resale price is no longer such an issue to many. Others , as you say , fall victim to reposession. Kf6vci , the Spark sounds great value. Did you buy it from Chiang Mai. If so , i saw the advert.

Fail to see anything decidedly odd here.

Prices on 1, 3, & 4 seem about right.

#2 seems a hunnert $ or two below typical

2º repo pressures partly maybe

Can't really agree or disagree.

Its your story.

Maybe real.

Maybe fantasy.

Dunno.

Heck, papa knows of bikes that appreciate after 10-years ownership.

Using the old rule-of-thumb:

(value = new price minus 20%; minus 1-bht per mile)

a B40K

bike is down to 32K when ridden off lot.

Ridden another 7Kkm; then B25K.

seems very similar to the scenario you describe.

[you failed to mention milage, so can't fairly compare to your finding]

Other factors may enter also, like mods, cosmesis, provenance, & buyer/seller motivation.

Buy a nice late-model scoot cheap,

and laugh @ depreciation.

Really, a really real reality.
