RAYONG: The long summer drought in the country's eastern region has now taken toll on the famous Khao Chamao waterfall in Rayong province with now a large number of the indigenous freshwater fish known as "pla pluang" have died.

Khao Chamao national park officials said they have collected almost a ton weight of pla pluang fish from the pond on the second level of the waterfall.

The pond of the size of 10 metres wide and five metres long on level 2, well-known as a place where thousands of the indigenous pluang fish queuing up to eat food given to them by tourists, is now filled with dying fish as there are no ventilation of new water flowing down.

The water gets warmer and is polluted, and with no oxygen, thus causing them to gradually die, park officials said.

Dead fishes, mostly pla pluang, pla kod, pla kang fishes, were collected of up to a ton weight and buried.

Earlier the park has tried to pump water from higher level ponds and release down to the fish pond or Wang Macha on level 2, but couldn’t help much, they said.

But they were hopeful that the seasonal rain this week might ease the situation.
