Students help move hundreds of fish from a drying pond to a larger pond

CHIANG MAI: -- All the fish in a drying pond at Wat U Mong in Chiang Mai have been moved to safety to a larger pond in Sanpatong district thanks to the help of a large group of fisheries faculty students of Mae Jo University.

The fish at Wat U Mong was at risk of dying because water in the pond has steadily receded due to the hot weather and has become polluted.

The students waded through the muddy pond and caught the fish with hands and simple tools and put them into containers before trucking them to Nong Sra Riam pond in Sanpatong district.

Well done you guys! Excellent job done in awful conditions. Those fish are part and parcel of the Wat Umong's heritage and certainly needed saving.

No mention of all the turtles, some are rare large Thai spotted softshells.... as well as many other species.

Probably just poor reporting, I would imagine that they moved all endangered animals.

But you have a good point.

I would have thought the turtles would have been the first to be moved. Maybe not reported as they are very stealable and large ones fetch high prices.

Visit Wat Umong often for Phra Charles' brilliant Sunday talks. Have watch the pond shrink alarmingly this year. Kudos to the students for doing something I thought impossible!
