UBON RATCHATHANI:- Householders and businesses in Ubon have been warned to be on the lookout for a fake electric meter man doing the rounds in the north eastern city.

The man - described as 30-35 wearing a cap - told an Ubon curtain shop that they owed 1,520baht from an outstanding bill that needed to be paid or they would be cut off, reported Daily News.

Worried about losing his electric the owner of the shop paid up. The man had seemed convincing enough, besides he had ID from the provincial authority and an authentic looking bill demand.

When the receipt was checked at the real office it was found to be fake.

An Egat spokeman said that people should watch out for the man. But bills are never collected in this way, he said.

A good CCTV image of the man was captured.

Hmmm this is troubling. A couple months ago about 20 people in my condo building received letters from MEA claiming non-payment and a service technician was coming the next day to remove the meter. I copied my last receipt and left it with the manager office downstairs and the manager said he would not let MEA into the building. Never heard anything more about it other than the manager said 20 others got the same letter. The letter looked real enough.

Had these tossers around Surin a while back. Had all the uniform and paper work and credentials. Was supposedly reading the meter at our shop and offered to pay the bill in the office save the missus driving into town. She and many others ,evidently according to PEA,handed over 13 or 1400 baht. Never to be seen again. The missus is really sharp but was taken in by all the right gear. Very convincing. She is still beating herself up for being taken for a ride.

You cant blame a con man for conning people he believes can be conned.I'm not saying its right, but no one got killed ,hurt or beaten up.it was a brave and well planned scam.He had all the right outfit and paperwork and he was very cool about speaking to his victims.i,honestly, would never have paid until i had assurance from the office that he was a true rep of the utility company concerned.

I say,it was a clean crime where money was sought and gained, through thorough blatancy.Once again i DO NOT agree with what he did but rather this than people getting shot who refuse to pay.

There is many a con man here from their own countries who have played the long firm and other cons and made a few quid out of them. They must have some sort of respect for the guy.i know i do.
