MRI scan cost at BKK Phuket Hospital

As per the title... anyone have any idea how much the above mentioned hospital charges for an MRI brain scan?

I can't say how much a brain scan is, but I've had a couple of MRI's there. One via Phuket International and one directly with BKK Phuket hospital. It was either 14 or 15K directly, and about 1500 baht cheaper if you go to Phuket International and say you want a scan.

Be forewarned, all MRI machines aren't the same and the equipment used in BKK Phuket is the weakest machine available. MRI machines are measured in Tesla's with a 5 Tesla being a world class machine, while 1 Tesla ( the one at BKK Phuket hospital) and does not show near as much as more powerful machines.

1-2 months old is the info. They use a nice big Siemens machine, but it's just 1 Tesla.

Manufacturer SIEMENS currently has models on offer from 0.35 T to 1.5 T.

So even if your absolute numbers can not be verified, it is still obvious that the BKK Hospital Phuket does not have the latest in technology.

Forgot to mention on the subject, but Vachira also has an MRI machine, again a low powered machine..

The web site seems to be describing the old machine judging by the stated size of the bore.

I was told, and also tested it out, that the new MRI has a 60 cm bore.

While I am not a specialist (and you are not too) - I would never present something that I know NOTHING about as if I did know it. Resistive magnet has nothing to do with an overall machine power!

Resistive Magnet

A type of magnet that utilizes the principles of electromagnetism to generate the magnetic field. Typically large current values and significant cooling of the magnet coils is required. The resistive magnet does not require cryogens, but needs a constant power supply to maintain a homogenous magnetic field, and can be quite expensive to maintain.

Resistive magnets fall into two general categories - iron-core and air-core.

Iron-core electromagnets provide the advantages of a vertically oriented magnetic field, and a limited fringe field with little, if any, missile effects due to the closed iron-flux return path.

Air-core electromagnets exhibit horizontally oriented fields, which have large fringe fields (unless magnetically shielded) and are prone to missile effects. Resistive magnets are typically limited to maximum field strengths of approximately 0.6T.

Here it is clearly stated that Phuket MRI machines is 1.5T. Not the weakest one. Who needs your fantasises about this???

And here, on the Radiology clinic site, the hospital states their MRI is 0.23T.

Perhaps you should criticize the hospital for not updating their web site.

Try reading the full thread, and all the facts, before throwing insults at posters.

Strange thing is this Johnny come lately has no idea and clearly didn't read the thread. The information about the low level MRI comes from actual doctors that have knowledge of the equipment.. Obviously the doctors don't know what they're talking about since they actually have to read scans from the machine in question.

This is such a polite statement coming from someone that is gaining his valuable knowledge from reading a hospital website.

Everyone thinks everything in Thailand is inexpensive.

 

I recently went to Bangkok Hospital, Bumrungrad and Samitivej Hospital to see if any of their physician could figure out the cause of my hip pain.  

Every single hospital wanted to do a MRI. 

My first impression with Bangkok Hospital was that it was a very nice hospital but while waiting for the physician I noticed a string quartet in lobby area.  I've never been in a hospital that played live music.  When I saw orthopedic specialist, he asked some questions and did the routine checking around and said, "I think you have avascular necrosis".  I'm no genius but I do know that anytime I hear "necrosis" it means that something is dying.  Then he said he wanted to get an MRI.  I was in shock and OK'd it but once I regained my wit I asked how much will it cost since I didn't have insurance and was paying out of pocket.  I was told that it would cost 35,000 baht to get an MRI on both hips and both knees, so it breaks down to 8,750 baht per MRI.  I told him to to hold off and that I was going to think about it.  When paying my bill, the total was close to 5000 baht and that was just for a 10 minute consultation (they did take my weight, height and blood pressure).  That string quartet was not free, that's for sure.

I went to Bumrungrad and the physician did some test and then reassured me that there is no way I could have avascular necrosis but wanted to do an MRI as well.  The cost was basically the same.  Samitivej was slightly lower but not by that much, just a couple of thousand baht cheaper.

 

All the hospitals mentioned above have excellent facilities and excellent physician but they are by no means economical.

As we've had a thread resurrection Vachira has an MRI- I was sent there from Mission, which has an arrangement with them. The cost was around B12k IIRC.

A friend has just made an apt at Bkk Phuket Hospital for an MRI on the shoulder...……..was quoted 12K baht.
