UBON RATCHATHANI: -- An Ubon man is in hospital after being attacked by a bear "as big as a buffalo" that jumped down from a tree while he was out collecting mushrooms.

And now he has a souvenir of the attack - doctors found a bear tooth embedded in one of his deep wounds, reported Sanook.

Somporn, 27, was foraging behind the temple of Wat Phu Plansung on Sunday evening when he was attacked suffering serious injuries. He was bitten on the head, neck and right hand and wound up in Sapsithprasong Hospital in Ubon after being transferred from a local hospital. A woman was also treated locally. They told doctors that the bear was as big as a buffalo.

Doctors found a broken tooth in a wound as the picture of that and the story did the rounds of social media.

But the local national park chief said he should not have been in the area behind the temple. Teerayuth Wongpaisert the head of the Phu Jong Na Yoi park said that the area of the attack was in the national park. Entry in that area is forbidden because it is a known habitat of wild animals. Teerayuth said that efforts to warn villagers about the danger of going in that area would be stepped up.

A Malaysian sun bear is most likely candidate.

As big as a buffalo"? Maybe if you've been on the weed?

No grizzlies in Ubon.

Drop bears?

Drop bears are native to Oz, they would be very lost if found in Ubon.

True Chang me old mate, but how can you be sure...

Must have been a very strong tree if a buffalo could hide in it

And btw. the bear seems to have been fed to much candy damaging its tooth. Should see a dentist.

Jeez I dunno... looking at the size of that tooth in the OP photo... that's DROP BEAR size!

Who said there's no drop bears in Thailand... I'm not so sure!

Was staying at a resort near Kantharalak and they had a young orphaned Sun Bear. Mother was killed by poachers.

It was the size of a large Koala and cute. Always seeking attention and a rub on its back.

Because he wasn't supposed to pic rooms there as it's a national park, wasn't it?
