Aussie tourist makes a "wai" as bad as his cycling on Doi Suthep!

CHIANG MAI: -- The case of the Aussie tourist and his mates who recklessly rode their bikes up Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai has been concluded.

It ended in front of Phu Ping Ratchaniwet police station with "Sam the Vegan" otherwise know as McCullum, 23, attempting a wai, reported Thairath. Though the wai was about as good as his appalling cycling it was accepted by the officers who arrested him for negligent riding and littering.

But the Aussie got in a few parting shots explaining his behavior: "I was following two friends on a motorbike," he said and there was no chance of
an accident".

This seemed to contradict the viral video of the rise to the top of the hill when two pick-ups can clearly been seen screeching to a halt.

"And as for the littering charge," he said in mitigation, "that was just while we were videoing - I went back to pick it up after".

Police still fined him on both misdemeanors.

Finally after bringing such attention to himself the Australian asked in true celebrity fashion to now be left alone and for the comments online to
cease.

He had videoed his arrest by two police and even went online to apologize too. Before demonstrating that forgettable wai with hands clasped somewhere around his navel rather than nearer his chin as is usually the custom when saying sorry.

All the moody older expats commenting on his youtube videos are pretty entertaining. They just can't bear to see a young guy having fun in Thailand. Obviously the usual 'does he have a work permit to live here' reared it's ugly head too.

I'm by no means old but this guy is a tool and if that's his idea of fun he's got some serious issues. What a stain.

Aussie tourist !!! soon to be sorely missed ex Aussie tourist.

His stupid behavior and cavalier attitude will end in tragedy.

Am I correct in saying that what these boys did warrants a fine and public humiliation when motorbikes are exempt from the law enforcement for doing the same thing?

give him some credit, i would not have waied at all.

This is little more than a pathetic attempt to keep thi hit coming by keeping a dead story alive.

welcome to thaivisa "news"

I have to agree with your second sentence. I'm sure every tourist knows the intricacies of proper waiing in the same way that every Asian tourist to Australia knows how to give a decent handshake (or maybe, even a simple "thank you" to the cashier at a store).

This clown made himself a soft target, and cops, whatever color, like soft targets.

As for the social media attack, he ensured it will continue by asking for it to stop.

The police are actually going to let him do it again with a police escort clearing the roads, if you watch the video he filmed at the station.

He had his own riders up front as escorts the first time too, it wasn't actually that risky it just looks dramatic on camera with the music. Cutting corners is pretty standard up Doi Suthep, car drivers do it all the time.

The littering although a bit silly was just for effect, they went back to pick up the bottle of water they threw. Just a misguided decision to look dramatic on video.

I understand vegans can be a bit insufferable, and I'm not one of them, but actually they do a lot of good for Thailand. They run annual non-profit fruit festivals and bring in tons of young tourists and money to Chiang Mai. Plus they make youtube videos about Thailand, which in turns brings in the new generation of tourists.

They're much more positive for Thailand than angry old sexpats (even though I am a sexpat myself, I can see this to be the truth). There's actually a video on another vegan channel about how they single handedly helped a Thai to buy a vegan restaurant.

Love it when the first truck slams on the brakes and the "as usual" following way to close behind truck almost rear ends him. Priceless!!

Yes, u are , but often the people on the motorbikes are dead bah.gif ;

I saw the video a few days ago and we can clearly see that if the brakes failed on the grey pickup that ting-tong aussie should be in a urn as ashes ..

It's because of irresponsible people like him we, as cyclists, will have one day - that I don't want - interdiction to clim Doi Suthep or any other mountain roads in Thailand .

Expulse him from Thailand and blacklist him should be the best solution ..

Being a vegan or not makes no difference in Thailand, this cyclist should be lucky to be alive.

I ride my bicycle up and down Jomtien beach almost every day. There's a large group of old people that sit down in one spot near the police kiosk. When I first started I got some funny looks and the looks got funnier as I continued to do this for a year without leaving Thailand. They think it's strange that a foreigner can live here on something other than a retirement visa.
